Gwangju’s Yoo ready to shine

When Yoo Jong-hyun signed with Gwangju FC this year, he thought about emulating his longtime idol Didier Drogba, the Ivorian striker who plays for English club Chelsea. But now, the 23-year-old footballer finds himself more comfortable playing as a defender, hoping to become more like Serbian international and Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic.

Before starting his professional career, Yoo was widely known in his college years as the “next Didier Drogba.” The former Konkuk University striker was often compared to Drogba with his 196-centimeter (6 feet, 5 inch) height and powerful plays in the penalty box. Fans even dubbed him “Yoorogba,” combining his name with Drogba. It caught on and Yoo used the odd nickname as his Twitter id.

But when Yoo entered this year’s K-League draft and joined Gwangju FC, he was no longer seen as striker, but as a center back. With head coach Choi Man-hee’s decision to alter Yoo’s role, the rookie simply had to accept playing as a defender.

Yoo has middle-school experience in the defender role but that was only temporary and he’s never been a regular defender in his 13-year career until now. The Ilsan-born player said he wrote down striker and defender as his preferable positions on a club survey but never thought he would really play as defender.

Yoo first noticed he was going to make his professional debut as defender when Choi placed him with fellow defenders at the club’s first team training session in last December.

“At that moment, I knew I would be playing as a defender in the K-League,” Yoo said to Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper. “But I wasn’t disappointed because I’ve heard that defenders have long careers in the K-League.

“I want to be the best defender in the K-League. I want fans to know that I have the best heading skills in the league.”

Yoo made his professional debut on March 20 against Ulsan Hyundai FC. Even though his team lost the game 2-1, Yoo was praised for containing Korean national-team striker Kim Shin-wook. “I know Kim from our college years, so that is why it was easy for me to mark him,” Yoo said.

But that was just the beginning of his successful transformation as a center back. On April 22, Yoo played an important role in Gwangju’s 1-0 victory over FC Seoul and has continued to make a big impact for his club.

“He is tall but has good ball skills,” Choi said. “I think he has a bright future as a center back.”

And in order to grow as a better defender, Yoo said he is currently getting advice from fellow Konkuk University alumnus Sim Woo-yeon, who also changed his position from forward to defender when he turned pro in 2006.

“Sim is the best example of a striker-turned-defender and I want to be like him,” Yoo said. “We communicate frequently by texting and he tells me about things I need to improve.”

For rookie defenders like Yoo, the biggest weakness is lacking experience defending against skillful attackers. Yoo knows he is dominant in the air but doesn’t have fast enough feet to stop quick attackers with technique.

“I try to study the movements of attackers who are good at getting behind the defensive line with their speed,” Yoo said. “I want to work hard and show fans that tall players can also defend against fast attackers.”

‘드로그바’에서 ‘검은 비디치’가 된 유종현

'드로그바'가 '검은 비디치'로 변신했다.

K-리그 광주FC 수비수 유종현(23)의 이야기다. 그는 공격수 출신이다. 건국대 시절 196㎝의 큰 키로 최전방을 누볐다. 별명은 잉글랜드 프리미어리그 첼시 공격수 디디에 드로그바였다. 건장한 체구와 까맣게 탄 얼굴, 넘치는 힘이 드로그바와 꼭 닮아서다.

하지만 올 시즌 프로 무대에 데뷔한 이후 별명이 바뀌었다. 최만희 광주 감독의 전술에 따라 수비수로 전향한 후 '검은 비디치'가 됐다. 공이 높이 떠오르면 어김없이 유종현이 달려와 머리로 공을 따내 붙여진 별명이다. 맨체스터 유나이티드의 네마냐 비디치는 헤딩 능력이 탁월한 중앙 수비수다.

유종현은 광주에 입단하고 나서 진행된 설문조사에서 원하는 포지션을 묻는 항목에 공격수와 수비수를 적어냈다. 중학교 시절 잠깐 동안 수비수로 뛴 적이 있어서다. 그렇다고 해서 수비수로 포지션을 바꾼다고는 생각하지 않았다. 지난해 12월 진행된 광주의 첫 훈련 날. 최만희 감독은 유종현에게 수비수들과 함께 훈련을 하라고 지시했다. 그는 그제야 "아, 내가 프로에서는 수비수로 뛰게 됐구나"라고 눈치챘다. "K-리그에서는 수비수로 뛰는 게 더 오래 뛸 수 있다"라는 충고를 자주 들어왔기 때문에 실망하지 않았다. 오히려 "K-리그 최고 수비수가 되겠다. 팬들에게 '헤딩은 유종현이 최고'라는 이미지를 심어주겠다"고 각오를 다졌다.

그는 3월 20일 울산전에 중앙 수비수로 데뷔전을 치렀다. 경기에서 패했지만 울산의 동갑내기 장신 공격수 김신욱을 꽁꽁 묶어 합격점을 받았다. 김신욱의 키도 196㎝로 유종현과 같다. 그는 "(김)신욱이와는 대학 시절부터 친하게 지낸 사이다. 서로 잘 알고 있다. 그래서 더 막기 쉬웠던 것 같다"고 말했다. 7라운드에는 FC 서울을 1-0으로 꺾는데 공헌해 생애 첫 주간 베스트11에 뽑히기도 했다. 최 감독은 "키가 크지만 공을 다루는 센스가 좋다. 중앙 수비수로 성공할 가능성이 높은 선수"라고 칭찬했다.

유종현의 롤 모델은 전북 수비수 심우연이다. 심우연 역시 196㎝다. 건국대 선배로 프로에 와 공격수에서 수비수로 전향한 점이 똑같다. 유종현은 심우연과 수시로 문자를 주고받으며 도움을 받는다. 유종현은 "(심)우연이 형은 공격수 출신 수비수로 성공한 케이스다. 나도 우연이 형처럼 되고 싶다. 요즘 연락을 주고받으며 내가 보완해야할 점에 대해 듣고 있다"고 말했다.

새내기 수비수 유종현에게는 약점이 있다. 헤딩 능력은 탁월하지만 발이 조금 느리다. 그는 "최성국(수원) 선수 같이 빠른 유형을 만나면 수비하기 조금 버겁다. 그래서 요즘 수비 뒷공간을 파고드는 공격수의 움직임에 대해 공부하고 있다"며 "노력을 통해 키가 큰 선수도 발이 빠른 선수를 막을 수 있다는 걸 보여주고 싶다"고 각오를 밝혔다.
