Will Park move from Monaco?

Speculation that Korean striker Park Chu-young will leave AS Monaco could soon prove true, following his club’s relegation from the top French league on Sunday after a 2-0 defeat at home to Olympique Lyon.

Park started the final round of the French Ligue 1 match, partnering up with Honduran striker Georgie Welcome, but he was replaced by Daniel Niculae in the 78th minute when he failed to score.

Monaco, the French champions in 2000 and UEFA Champions League runners-up in 2004, was able to hold Lyon 0-0 in the first half at the Stade Louis II stadium, but surrendered two goals later.

The loss sent the club to the second division for the first time since 1977.

Monaco opened the second half with a decent strike from Chris Malonga in 53rd minute but it was the visitors who took the lead and kept it until the end. Lyon got ahead in the 67th minute when Pape Diakhate tapped in a rebound from Monaco goalkeeper Sebastien Chabbert. The keeper blocked a shot from Maxime Gonalons but failed to deny the Senegalese defender.

Argentine striker Lisandro Lopez added Lyon’s second goal in the 82nd minute after receiving a cross from Aly Cissokho and blasting it into the net.

The win will allow Lyon, which finished third in Ligue 1, to compete in the Champions League next season.

Monaco, however, was pushed to 18th in the league with nine wins, 17 draws and 12 losses. It will play in Ligue 2 next season with Arles-Avignon and RC Lens.

Despite his disappointing performance against Lyon, Park had his best season since coming to Europe in 2008. He scored 12 goals in 33 games this season, making him the team’s top scorer and the 12th scorer in the league. His record also makes him the third Korean footballer to earn a two-digit goal scoring record in Europe, behind Cha Bum-keun and Seol Ki-hyeon.

Now that Monaco has been relegated to Ligue 2, Park is likely to start looking for a new club.

Park’s agent told Yonhap News Agency yesterday that the striker will look to transfer in the summer.

Park was linked to several clubs even before the season finale. Several European media outlets have previously reported that the former FC Seoul player’s name has been on the list of English clubs like Liverpool FC and Bolton Wanderers, while Spanish club Atletico Madrid is also reported to be interested in him. French teams are also said to be interested in Park.

According to the Web site “Football 365,” this season’s French league champion, LOSC Lille, may want Park to strengthen the team when it plays in the Champions League next season.

Football experts say that if Park tries to move to another club, he may face some trouble regarding his transfer fee and salary.

Park is valued at an estimated 6 million euros ($8.56 million). After Monaco’s relegation to Ligue 1, however, other teams will look to get him for less - and that’s not likely to sit well with his current club.

Park’s move will also result in a salary reduction because of the tax system in other countries. Monaco currently doesn’t collect any taxes on the player’s 2 million euro salary.

Meanwhile, Park will return to Korea this week to play in the two national team friendlies, against Serbia on Friday and Ghana next Tuesday. He is also getting married on June 12 to his long time girlfriend.

박주영, 어디로 가시나이까

AS모나코 33년 만에 2부로 강등
리옹·유벤투스·리버풀 영입 관심
이적료 96억원 안팎 … 병역 걸림돌

박주영(26)의 소속팀 AS모나코가 2부리그로 강등됐다. 이적설이 끊이지 않았던 박주영이 팀을 옮길 가능성은 한층 높아졌다.

AS모나코는 30일(한국시간) 모나코 루이2세 경기장에서 열린 올랭피크 리옹과의 2010~2011 프랑스 프로축구 리그1 38라운드 홈경기에서 0-2로 졌다. 리그 최종전에서 패한 AS모나코는 9승17무12패(승점44)로 최종 순위 18위가 돼 1977~1978시즌 1부리그 승격 이후 33년 만에 2부리그로 내려가게 됐다. 총 20개 팀이 경쟁하는 리그 1은 18위부터 20위까지 하위 3개팀이 2부리그로 떨어진다.

박주영은 AS모나코와 2013년 여름까지 계약돼 있다. 하지만 팀의 강등으로 이적할 가능성이 커졌다. 향후 리그 배당금, 스폰서십, 중계권료 등의 감소를 피할 길 없는 AS모나코는 선수를 팔아 자금을 마련해야 하기 때문이다. 아시아 선수라는 희소성에 올 시즌 12골을 터뜨린 실력을 겸비한 박주영은 AS모나코가 팔기 좋은 상품이다. 여기에 유럽 언론은 파리 생제르맹, 릴, 올랭피크 리옹 등 프랑스 클럽뿐 아니라 유벤투스(이탈리아), 볼턴 원더러스, 리버풀, 아스널(이상 잉글랜드), 아틀레티코 마드리드(스페인) 등이 박주영 영입에 관심이 있다고 전했다.

박주영도 이적에 대한 거부감이 없다. 박주영은 최근 “유럽축구연맹(UEFA) 챔피언스리그나 유로파리그 등 유럽클럽대항전에 나설 수 있는 팀으로 가고 싶다”고 했다. 프랑스 리그에 잔류할 경우 앞서 언급한 구단들 중 어느 팀으로 가더라도 다음 시즌에 유럽클럽대항전을 경험할 수 있다. 릴 또는 리옹 유니폼을 입는다면 당장 다음 시즌 챔피언스리그 무대를 밟는다.

하지만 변수가 많다. 일단 이적료와 연봉이라는 걸림돌을 넘어야 한다.

유럽에서 박주영의 이적료는 600만 유로(약 96억원) 안팎으로 평가받고 있다. 하지만 구단 운영자금이 필요한 AS모나코가 더 높은 몸값을 책정한다면 이적 시장에서 박주영의 가치는 떨어진다.

연봉은 박주영이 손해를 감수해야 할 것으로 보인다. 박주영은 세금을 내지 않는 모나코에서 200만 유로(약 32억원)의 연봉을 받았다. 타 구단으로 이적할 경우 최소 30% 이상을 세금으로 공제해야 한다. 이를 보전하려면 적어도 300만 유로(약 48억원) 이상의 연봉을 보장받아야 한다. 빅 클럽이 아니라면 조건을 맞추기가 쉽지 않다. 병역의무를 마치지 않았다는 점도 이적 시장에서 마이너스 요인이다.
