Time always comes back to bite you

One day is made up of 86,400 seconds. A month of 30 days has 2,592,200 seconds. Say there are 12 30-day months in one year, and there are 31,104,000 seconds. A femtosecond is one quadrillionth of a second. It is the smallest unit of time that can be measured.

In the world of the femtosecond, humans are eternal beings that do not move. So if you are intoxicated by power, you could mistakenly believe that you are living in the world of the femtosecond and can live forever.

But you can’t put your feet into the same river twice. Time moves forward and never repeats itself. You can neither seize time nor stop it. Time swallows everything and leaves only debris. It makes it possible for humans to exist. But time takes life away again through death.

In Greek mythology, Cronus was born to Gaia, the Greek goddess of the Earth, and Uranus, the sky god. Cronus devoured his children in order to keep his power. So Cronus is often related to time, and words like chronology and chronicle come from the same root.

Just as Karl Marx put it, “Time is everything, man is nothing: he is, at the most, time’s carcass.”

The stories of heroes have a certain pattern. They are either born very low or miraculously. The heroes defeat evil villains with extraordinary force and wisdom. In return, they seize power, and their power leads to arrogance and pride. In the end, they go down the path of downfall because of betrayal or self-destruction. The lesson of hero stories is how transient time and power can be.

The Busan Savings Bank scandal illustrates that the spring of the Lee Myung-bak administration is over. We are heading toward the ending of a hero story.

The secret favors and mediations have been revealed, and the season of betrayal and disclosure has come and gone. The corruption of former Financial Supervisory Service Governor Kim Jong-chang and former commissioner of the Board of Audit and Inspection Eun Jin-su is only a prelude.

In the latter days of the administration, those who waited will rise and start an offensive. A disclosure war will begin and dirty secrets will be revealed. Connections and relationships from the good old days will strike back as poison. All of the scandals that happened during the past administrations also developed that way.

No one can win against time.

봄날은 갔다

하루는 8만6400초다. 한 달을 평균 30일로 잡을 때 259만2200초다. 한 해를 30일이 열두번 반복된다고 치면 3110만4000초다. 1초를 1000조(兆)로 나눈 게 펨토초(femto秒)다. 계측할 수 있는 가장 짧은 단위의 시간이다. 펨토초의 세계에서 보면 인간은 움직이지 않는 영원의 존재다. 권력에 도취해 있으면 펨토초의 세계에 사는 걸로 착각하기 십상이다. 공중을 나는 화살이 표적에 영원히 도달하지 못한다는 제논의 역설처럼 시간은 펨토초로 흘러 끝이 없다고 오해한다.

똑같은 강물에 발을 두 번 담글 수 없는 법이다. 찰나로 흘러가는 시간은 반복을 모른다. 붙잡을 수도,멈출 수도 없다. 모든 걸 집어 삼키고 잔해만 남긴다. 그리스신화에 아버지 우라노스(하늘)와 어머니 가이아(땅) 사이에 태어난 크로노스가 있다. 지배권을 빼앗기지 않기 위해 자식을 먹어치우는 그의 행위를 시간에 비유한다. 시간은 아버지처럼 인간을 존재하게 해주지만 죽음을 통해 다시 거둬간다. 크로노스(Chronos)는 그래서 시간을 의미한다. 연대학(chronology)·연대기(chronicle)이 여기서 비롯됐다. 칼 마르크스의 고상한 말을 빌리자면 "사람은 시간의 시체일 뿐"이다.

동·서양의 영웅담은 일정한 패턴이 있다. 비천하거나 기적적으로 태어난다. 초인적인 힘과 지략으로 악의 무리를 무찌른다. 그 보상으로 권력을 움켜쥔다. 권력은 오만과 교만의 씨앗을 키운다. 종국엔 배신이나 자멸로 몰락의 내리막길을 걷는다는 줄거리가 일반적이다. 세월과 권력의 무상함을 되새기라는 지혜가 담겨있다.

부산저축은행 사건은 정권의 봄날이 갔음을 보여준다. '꽃이 피면 같이 웃고 꽃이 지면 같이 울던/알뜰한 그 맹세에 봄날은 간다'는 유행가 가사처럼 영웅담의 끝자락으로 향하고 있다. 너와 나만 알던 청탁과 알선이 드러나고,물고 물리는 배반의 계절로 접어들고 있다. 김종창 전 금감원장과 은진수 전 감사원 감사위원의 비리는 예고편에 불과하다. 정권 후반기엔 숨 죽이던 세력이 아귀처럼 달려든다. 치부와 비리를 까발리는 폭로전이 판칠 것이다. 삼인성호(三人成虎),세 사람이 짜면 호랑이도 만든다. 호시절의 안면과 친분,위세가 독(毒)이 돼 돌아온다. 김영삼 정부의 한보 게이트,김대중 정부의 정현준·진승현·이용호 게이트, 노무현 정부의 박연차 게이트가 그런 식으로 전개됐다. 시간 앞에 장사 없다.
