NK coach says team struck by lightning

DRESDEN, Germany - North Korea’s women’s football coach Kim Kwang-min claimed several players had played in their opening 2-0 World Cup loss to the United States on Tuesday despite still suffering from the effects of a lightning strike at a pretournament training camp.

“Frankly speaking, when we were having training and test matches before we left for this tournament, five of the players were hit by lightning and were in hospital,” Kim said through an interpreter at the postgame press conference.

“Some of the players were left behind. Some were in hospital and came later. Until now they were not fully treated for the match.” Kim said the incident occurred on June 8.

He added that the players most affected were the goalkeeper, four defenders and some midfield players.

The coach said doctors decided they were not fit to play but that they played anyway.

벼락을 맞고도 축구를 한다? 여자 월드컵에 참가중인 북한 여자축구 국가대표팀의 몇몇 선수들이 벼락을 맞은 충격을 이겨내고도 경기를 뛰어 화제다.

AFP는 29일(이하 한국시간) '북한의 선수들이 훈련 캠프 도중 벼락을 맞고도 경기에 뛰었다'고 보도했다. 북한 대표팀 김광민 감독은 29일 독일 드레스덴에서 열린 2011년 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 여자 월드컵 본선 조별리그 C조 1차전에서 미국에 0-2로 패한 뒤 가진 인터뷰에서 "대회를 앞두고 북한에서 훈련 도중 선수 5명이 벼락을 맞아 병원에 입원했다"고 말했다.

이들은 지난 8일 평양의 훈련 캠프에서 훈련 도중 선수 5명이 벼락을 맞았다. 일부는 병원에 입원했다가 뒤늦게 독일로 이동해 선수단에 합류했다. 김 감독은 "의사는 벼락을 맞고 20일이 지났지만 선수들이 경기에 뛰기 어려울 것이라고 말했다"며 "경기에 뛸 정도로 완벽히 회복되지 않았지만 선수들의 의지가 강해 오늘 경기에 출장했다"고 밝혔다.

김 감독은 벼락을 맞은 선수 이름을 공개하지 않았으나 "골키퍼가 가장 크게 다쳤고 다른 부상 선수는 수비수와 미드필더"라고 말했다. 한편 북한은 이날 FIFA랭킹 1위 미국을 맞아 후반 9분 로렌 체니에게 헤딩골을 내줬고, 후반 31분 레이첼 뷸러에게 추가골을 허용해 완패했다.
