Injuries force Kim to end NPB stint

Chiba Lotte Marines first baseman Kim Tae-kyun wants to play in the KBO next season, the slugger said in an interview with Ilgan Sports yesterday, after reaching a mutual agreement with his Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball team to immediately terminate his contract.

The former Hanwha Eagles player, 29, signed a three-year deal with the Marines in 2009 worth a maximum of 700 million yen ($9 million). But Kim recently asked the Marines to nullify his contract because he said he felt guilty for not helping the team.

Kim suffered from an injury to his hip last month and has been in Korea since June 20 for treatment.

“It’s about time to start the second half of the season, but I have rested for a long time,” Kim told Ilgan Sports. “Even if I go back, I won’t be of any help to the team, so I decided to give up my contract.”

Kim said the Marines tried to persuade him to reconsider his decision, but later accepted his proposal. Kim will receive the remainder of his salary for this season, but the third year of his contract, which is worth 150 million yen, is void.

Kim made a solid NPB debut in 2009, when he had a .268 batting average, 21 home runs and 92 RBI in 141 games.

But Kim’s sophomore season has been ruined by a series of injuries to his right hand, right wrist and waist. He was also demoted to the minor leagues twice, thanks largely to a meager .250 batting average with one home run and 14 RBI in 31 games.

“Since the beginning of the season, I felt sorry for the club because I was in a slump and had injuries,” Kim said. “I decided to leave the team before I did more harm.”

Kim also said that tsunami and earthquake damage in Japan was also a factor that made him end his 20-month stint with the club.

“Honestly, I became emotionally vulnerable after the earthquakes,” Kim said. “My family in Korea was always worried about me.”

According to KBO rules, Kim will not be able to play in the KBO this year but can begin negotiating for next season beginning this fall.

For now, Kim said he’s not too concerned with where he’ll end up.

“I just ended my contract with Lotte and I haven’t thought about afterwards,” Kim said.

김태균(29)이 일본프로야구 지바 롯데와 20개월 만에 결별했다. 올 시즌 뒤 한국 무대 복귀가 유력해졌다.

　부상 치료차 국내에 머무르고 있는 김태균은 최근 지바 롯데 구단과 내년 시즌 계약 해지에 합의했다. 김태균은 27일 본지와 인터뷰에서 “지바 롯데를 떠나기로 구단과 합의했다”고 말했다. 2009년 11월 자유계약선수(FA) 자격으로 한화를 떠나 지바 롯데와 3년간 최대 7억 엔(약 94억원)에 계약했던 김태균은 두 시즌을 채우지 못하고 일본을 떠나게 됐다.

　결별의 표면적인 이유는 허리 부상 장기화다. 김태균은 허리 부상 치료차 지난 6월 20일 귀국해 천안 본가에 머물며 통원치료를 받았다. 김태균은 “외국인 선수로서 팀에 도움이 되지 못했다. 올 시즌 초부터 부진했고 부상까지 겹쳤다. 구단에 미안했다. 더 큰 피해를 주기 전에 팀을 떠나야겠다고 결정했다”고 말했다. 지바 롯데 구단은 김태균을 만류했지만 결국 그의 뜻에 따라 남은 계약을 파기하기로 했다. 김태균은 “내년 시즌 연봉 1억5000만 엔과 옵션 5000만 엔은 받지 않는다. 올 시즌 잔여 연봉도 포기할 생각이었는데 구단이 계약에 따라 준다고 했다”고 전했다.

　지난 3월 발생한 동일본 대지진도 김태균에게 큰 영향을 줬다. 시즌 개막이 연기돼 3월 일시 귀국했던 그는 “동일본 대지진 후 솔직히 충격을 많이 받았다. 한국에 있는 가족들도 걱정을 많이 했다. 야구도 욕심처럼 되지 않았다”고 말했다.

　한국야구위원회(KBO) 규약상 김태균은 올해는 국내 구단에서 뛸 수 없고 시즌 뒤 FA 자격을 얻는다. 국내외 어느 구단과도 계약할 수 있지만 현재로선 국내 복귀가 유력해 보인다.
