Manning signs new deal with Colts

Quarterback Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts agreed to a five-year $90 million contract on Saturday that will make the four-time most valuable player the National Football League’s highest paid player.

Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the deal on Twitter, and it was later reported on the NFL’s official Web site.

“Signing Peyton was a top priority for this organization and we are thrilled that the deal is complete,” Irsay said on the Colts’ Web site. “We feel that it is a salary-cap-friendly deal and it allows us more flexibility.”

While the contract will average out at $18 million per season, matching New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s deal, Manning will be paid $69 million over the first three seasons. The $23 million average would easily make the 35-year-old Manning the league’s top-paid player.

It remains uncertain, though, when Manning will be able to start earning his raise.

The Colts quarterback is recovering from off-season neck surgery to correct a disk problem and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the preseason training camp.

“There is every medical indication that he is progressing steadily,” said Dr. Hank Feuer, the team’s neurosurgeon. “While he looks fine, he still has some rehabilitation to go.”

성추문과 슬럼프로 이빨 빠진 호랑이 신세가 된 타이거 우즈이지만 여전히 세계에서 가장 돈을 많이 버는 스포츠 선수였다. 우즈는 미국 스포츠전문지인 스포츠일러스트레이티드(SI)가 16일(현지시간) 발표한 ‘2011년 미국 스포츠선수 소득 상위 50위’에서 지난 5월까지 한해동안 6229만4116달러(약 677억원)를 벌어들인 것으로 집계돼 1위에 올랐다. SI가 순위를 발표하기 시작한 이래 8년 연속 1위다.

　우즈는 대회 상금 수입은 229만 달러에 그쳤지만 광고 수입이 6000만 달러에 달했다. 지난해 발표 때보단 약 3000만 달러 감소했다. 6118만5933달러를 번 골프선수 필 미켈슨은 우즈와 근소한 차이로 2위에 올랐다. SI는 우즈의 1위 행진이 곧 끝날 것으로 전망했다.

　미 프로농구(NBA) 마이애미 히트의 간판스타 르브론 제임스(4450만 달러), 미식축구(NFL) 인디애나폴리스 콜츠의 쿼터백 페이튼 매닝(3807만 달러), 미 프로야구(MLB) 뉴욕 양키스의 알렉스 로드리게스(3600만 달러), 자동차 경주대회 NASCAR의 데일 언하트(2657만2930달러)는 종목별 최고 수입 선수의 영예를 안았다. 50위 안에는 농구 선수가 19명으로 가장 많았고, 야구선수 17명, 미식축구 8명, NASCAR와 골프 선수가 각각 3명 포함됐다.

　SI는 미국을 제외한 외국인 고소득 선수 상위 20위도 매겼다. 테니스의 로저 페더러(스위스)가 5278만1940달러로 가장 많았다. 아시아 선수론 복싱의 매니 파퀴아오(필리핀·5250만 달러), NBA의 야오밍(중국·3568만6100달러), MLB의 스즈키 이치로(일본·2400만 달러)가 20걸에 포함됐다.
