CARNOUSTIE, Scotland - Yani Tseng became the youngest woman to win a fifth major title after capturing the Women’s British Open by four strokes over Brittany Lang on Sunday and immediately declared her intention to win more.

“It’s so great making history on this golf course and I feel wonderful right now,” Tseng said. “It feels really good and I hope to keep winning. Next year there are another four majors and I will try and organize and keep working hard.”

The 22-year-old Taiwanese shot a 3-under 69 to total 16-under 272 after trailing overnight leader Caroline Masson of Germany by two strokes entering the final round.

The top-ranked Tseng claimed her second successive British title, while Masson crashed to a closing 78 to finish in a share of fifth place.

“She will learn from her mistakes and every great player goes through that,” Tseng told the Press Association. “It’s not a big deal. You try your best and I’ve lost lots of times too.’’

Tseng dropped a shot at the first with three putts from 30 feet, missing a three-foot par putt. She birdied the third with a pitching wedge to two feet and the long sixth with a chip to five feet from just short of the green to be out in 35.

“I was a little nervous before the start but then I hit a good tee shot and I felt good,” Tseng said. “Having been in this position in a major a few times before, I am getting more mature and can handle the pressure better.”

Playing alongside Masson, who was out in 39, Tseng had taken a firm grip by the turn. She was just short of the green off the tee at the par four 11th and took two putts for a birdie, but then dropped a shot in two successive holes. She hit an 8-iron over the back of the green at 12 and then hit the pin off the tee on the short 13th but her ball came to rest on the edge of a bunker. She had to stand in the sand to play her second shot.

Tseng birdied the long 14th, where she hit her 4-iron second to 20 feet, then closed with two birdies, holing from 20 feet on the 17th and hitting a majestic 9-iron to three feet at the last.

Masson also finished with two birdies but had fallen behind, dropping four shots in the first three holes on the way home.

Lang shot a closing 67 to finish with a 276, one ahead of Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson, who had a final round 68. Korean Yang Hee-young (Amy Yang), alone in fourth, also posted a 67.

Masson finished on 9-under alongside home favorite Catriona Matthew, the 2009 champion, who had a double -bogey six on the final hole after pulling her second shot to the green out of bounds.

Lang, who was in a share of sixth overnight, eight behind Masson, picked up just one stroke by the turn, but the American bagged four birdies at Nos. 11, 12, 14 and 17.

“I played great today,” Lang said. “I made some really big par putts early on and from then on played fairly flawless golf.”

Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist finished in a share of seventh place on 280 alongside Koreans Yoo Sun-young, Choi Na-yeon and Pak In-bee.

American Stacy Lewis moved up the leaderboard with a 4-under 68, going from a share of 22nd overnight to a share of 11th on 7-under 281.

Sweden’s Maria Hjorth was alone in 13th on 282 after a 68 and Americans Katie Futcher and Cristie Kerr were in a group a stroke further back. Futcher, in a share of 64th overnight, equalled the best round of the week with an 8-under 64, including an eagle at the long 14th, followed by three birdies to be back in 29.

Kerr had four birdies and no dropped shots for a 68 to end 5-under.

여자골프 세계랭킹 1위 청야니(대만)가 세계 골프 역사를 새로 써 가고 있다.

청야니는 1일 오전(한국시간) 스코틀랜드의 커누스티 골프링크스(파72·6490야드)에서 끝난 올 시즌 마지막 메이저 대회인 브리티시 여자오픈에서 16언더파로 역전 우승했다. 청야니의 대회 2연패는 셰리 스타인하워(미국·1998~99년)에 이어 12년 만이다. 올 시즌 4승 가운데 지난 6월 열린 웨그먼스 LPGA챔피언십 우승에 이어 메이저 대회에서만 2승을 거뒀다. 통산 9승 가운데 5승이 메이저 우승이다.

특히 1989년 1월생인 청야니는 남녀를 통틀어 가장 어린 나이(22세6개월8일)에 메이저 5승 고지에 올랐다. 여자 선수로 이 부문 종전 기록은 패티 버그가 세운 25세4개월이고, 남자는 ‘골프 황제’ 타이거 우즈(미국)의 24세7개월이다. ‘골프의 전설’인 잭 니클라우스(미국)도 26세2개월이 돼서야 메이저 5승 문턱을 밟았다. 청야니가 종전 기록을 2년 이상 앞당긴 것이다.

청야니는 최근 2년 동안 8개 메이저 대회에서 4승을 쓸어담았다. 메이저 우승 확률이 50%에 달한다. 청야니의 이런 추세라면 역대 여자 선수 가운데 메이저 최다승 기록인 15승(패티 버그)은 물론 니클라우스가 보유하고 있는 18승도 뛰어넘을 것으로 보인다. 자신의 ‘멘토’ 안니카 소렌스탐(스웨덴)의 메이저 10승 달성도 이제는 시간 문제가 됐다.

청야니는 “골프를 시작하면서 메이저 대회에서 5승을 이렇게 빨리 달성할 것이라고는 절대 생각하지 못했다. 너무 기쁘고 행복하다”고 말했다. 그는 “야드지 북에 적어 놓은 ‘좋은 자세’ ‘좋은 준비’ ‘미소’라는 단어를 계속 되새겼다. 긴장을 풀기 위해 턱을 들고 미소를 지으며 당당하게 플레이했다”고 우승 소감을 밝혔다.

‘악마의 발톱’으로 악명 높은 커누스티는 청야니의 냉정하고 파워풀한 플레이에 무릎을 꿇었다. 청야니는 “18번 홀에 오니깐 장 방드 벨드(1999년 이곳에서 열린 디 오픈에서 17번 홀까지 3타 차 선두를 달리다가 마지막 홀에서 트리플 보기로 역전패함)가 생각났다. 티샷을 페어웨이로 보내는 데만 집중했다. 그리고 135야드에서 9번 아이언으로 두 번째 샷을 핀 1m에 붙였을 때야 비로소 우승을 확신했다”고 했다.

청야니는 현재 LPGA 투어에서 상금(177만 달러)·평균 타수(69.52타)·올해의 선수(229점) 등 전 부문에서 1위를 질주하고 있다. 청야니는 더욱 강해졌고 여유가 넘쳐나고 있다. 그는 “정신적·기술적 향상을 통해 내년에는 커리어 그랜드슬램을 달성하겠다”고 말했다.
