Kim Yu-na ranks 8th in list of highest-paid female athletes

Figure skater Kim Yu-na ranked eighth among the world’s highest-paid female athletes, according to a U.S. business magazine yesterday. Forbes magazine listed Kim at No. 8 with $10 million in earnings over a 12-month period starting in July 2010. The figure includes prize money and corporate endorsements, the magazine said.

The 20-year-old was the only winter sports athlete in the top 10. Forbes called her “South Korea’s most popular athlete.”

The magazine also noted that Kim last year founded her own management company, All That Sports, which organizes ice shows in Korea and Los Angeles.

Kim has signed major endorsement deals with some of Korea’s top corporations, including Samsung, Hyundai Motor and Kookmin Bank. She is the reigning Olympic champion and also has a world championship to her credit.

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova topped the list for the seventh straight year, having earned $25 million in the last 12 months.

Tennis players dominated the list with seven. Kim, racecar driver Danica Patrick and LPGA Tour golfer Paula Creamer were the only nontennis players in the top 10.

‘피겨 여왕’ 김연아(21·고려대)가 세계 여성스포츠 스타 소득 순위 공동 7위에 올랐다. 미국 경제전문지 포브스는 2일(한국시간) 인터넷판을 통해 지난 1년 동안 수입이 많은 여성 스포츠스타 10인을 소개하며 김연아를 공동 7위에 올렸다.

　포브스의 집계에 따르면 김연아는 1년 동안 1000만 달러(약 105억원)를 벌어들였다. 겨울 스포츠 선수로는 유일하게 톱10에 올랐다. 아시아 선수로는 김연아와 더불어 중국의 테니스 스타 리나(공동 7위)까지 두 명의 선수가 이름을 올렸다. 김연아는 지난해 같은 조사에서는 970만 달러(약 102억원)로 5위를 기록했다. 당시 김연아는 밴쿠버 올림픽에서 금메달을 따내 후원사로부터 많은 보너스를 받았다.

　김연아가 지난 1년간 대회를 통해 벌어들인 금액은 2만7000달러(약 3000만원)뿐이다. 모두 세계선수권 은메달 상금이다. 대신 가욋돈이 크게 늘었다. 김연아는 현재 5개의 광고 계약을 맺었으며 후원사는 세 개다. 귀금속 브랜드를 비롯해 4개 제품과 후원 계약을 맺었다. 포브스의 이번 집계에는 각종 광고와 방송 출연료 및 후원계약금 등이 포함됐다.

　한편 마리아 샤라포바(러시아·테니스)는 2500만 달러(약 262억원)를 벌어들여 7년 연속 최고 자리를 지켰다. 여자프로테니스(WTA) 랭킹 1위인 캐롤라인 워즈니아키(덴마크)는 1250만 달러(약 131억원)로 2위에 올랐고, 자동차 경주 나스카에서 활약중인 다니카 패트릭(미국)이 1200만 달러(약 126억원)로 3위를 기록했다.
