Ex-caddy takes swing at Tiger at Bridgestone

New Zealander Williams described Australian Scott’s four-shot victory at Firestone Country Club as the most satisfying of his career, despite having previously won 13 majors in tandem with Woods.
Williams also took issue with the manner of his firing by Woods on July 3, saying the split had been conducted over the phone and not face-to-face as his former employer has said.
“It’s the most satisfying win I’ve ever had, there’s no two ways about it,” Williams told reporters after Scott had clinched his first World Golf Championship title with a flawless five-under-par 65.
“The fans have been unbelievable. It’s the greatest week of my life caddying.”
Williams, who has previously caddied for Australian Greg Norman and American Raymond Floyd, was stunned when Woods abruptly decided to end a highly successful relationship dating back to 1999.
He was axed after the AT&T National at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, although the split was not made public until after the July 14-17 British Open to limit any distraction for Scott.
Williams later told New Zealand television he was “very disappointed” and felt he had wasted two years of his life with Woods having been sidelined for long stretches by leg injuries.
“I was absolutely shocked that I got the boot,” Williams, 47, said on Sunday. “I’ve caddied for the guy for 12 years. I’ve been incredibly loyal to the guy, and I got short shrifted.”
During the buildup to this week’s event at Firestone, Woods explained during a news conference how he had parted company with Williams.
“We had a nice conversation,” the 14-times major winner said. “We did it after he completed play at the AT&T National up in the boardroom. It was a tough conversation, but we said what we needed to say to each other face-to-face and man-to-man.”
Williams, who has now been on Scott’s bag for four tournaments in a row, disagreed.
“I was told on the phone that we need to take a break and, in caddie lingo, that means you’re fired, simple as that,” he said.
As Scott flawlessly played his way to a commanding victory on a hot afternoon at Firestone, Williams received almost as many cheers from the fans as his new employer.
“The people here have been absolutely astounding,” Williams said. “I caddied here for Greg, caddied here for Raymond, caddied here for Tiger, so I’ve been here a lot. This is a local town tournament ... they know all the players, they know all the caddies.” Reuters

애덤 스콧(호주)이 정상 등극을 위해 18번 홀 그린을 향해 걸어가고 있을 때 이미 승리의 환호가 울려퍼졌다. 하지만 갤러리들이 응원하고 있는 것은 스콧이 아니었다. 갤러리들은 스콧의 가방을 짊어진 그의 캐디가 함박웃음을 터뜨릴 때마다 “스티~브 윌~리엄스”라고 연신 목청을 높였다. 우승자와 캐디가 단짝처럼 그린에 도달하자 한 팬이 “타이거, 그래 기분이 어떠신가?”하고 크게 소리쳐 물었다.
스티브 윌리엄스(뉴질랜드)는 타이거 우즈(미국)와 1999년부터 이 대회 전까지 호흡을 맞춰온 캐디다. 우즈의 메이저 14승 가운데 13승을 함께할 만큼 ‘찰떡궁합’이었다. 특히 브리지스톤 인비테이셔널에서는 우즈의 7회 우승을 모두 보좌해 우즈의 ‘텃밭’으로 만든 일등공신이다. 하지만 윌리엄스는 지난달 21일 우즈로부터 해고 통보를 받고 쫓겨났다. 그는 당시 “솔직히 너무도 큰 충격을 받았다”고 말했다. 윌리엄스는 그렇게 우즈로부터 해고된 지 19일 만에 스콧의 캐디로 그의 우승을 견인하면서 우즈의 ‘텃밭’을 짓뭉개버렸다.
스콧은 대회 3라운드에서 12언더파로 단독 선두에 나선데 이어 마지막날 5타(버디 5개)를 줄인 끝에 합계 17언더파로 세계랭킹 1위 루크 도널드(잉글랜드)와 리키 파울러(미국·이상 합계 13언더파)를 4타 차로 따돌리고 우승했다.
윌리엄스를 해고한 우즈는 친구인 브라이언 벨(미국)을 임시 캐디로 고용해 3개월여 만에 출전했지만 합계 1오버파를 쳐 공동 37위에 머물렀다. 윌리엄스는 스콧과 호흡을 맞춘 뒤 아주 짧은 시간에 새 주인을 PGA 투어 통산 8승째이자 WGC대회에서 처음으로 정상에 올려놓았다.
스콧은 “윌리엄스는 이 코스와 그린에 대해 엄청난 정보를 갖고 있었다. 그는 이번 코스를 멋지게 안내했다. 그가 우승을 도왔다는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다”고 극찬했다.
대회를 중계하던 미국 CBS 방송은 스콧이 우승을 확정짓자 캐디 윌리엄스를 따로 인터뷰했다. 대회 사상 이처럼 우승자의 캐디를 인터뷰하는 예는 거의 없다. 그만큼 스콧의 캐디 윌리엄스에 쏠린 팬들의 관심이 컸다는 방증이다.
그는 CBS와의 인터뷰에서 “캐디 인생 33년 동안 오늘로 145승을 거두었다. 그리고 이번 우승이 지금까지 내가 이룩한 가장 위대한 우승이었다”고 스콧의 찬사에 화답했다. 그에게 우즈의 존재 따위는 없었다. 윌리엄스는 자신을 잘라버린 우즈에 대해 여전히 분노했다.
우즈는 “얼굴을 맞대고 직접 얘기했다”고 말하고 있지만 윌리엄스는 “우즈가 전화로 자신을 해고했다”고 말했다. 우즈는 “이번 주 내내 이따금씩 그 일(해고)이 생각났다”며 대회장을 떠났다.
