Competing rallies set to mar holiday

Massive back-to-back liberal and conservative rallies are scheduled for downtown Seoul today, presaging yet another confrontational Liberation Day.

Koreans across the country are set to celebrate the 66th anniversary of independence from Japanese colonial rule, but the nation’s social divisions will once again surface in the capital with competing demonstrations.

The National Police Agency issued a warning that any illegal actions, such as street marches or violent protests, will be sternly but fairly punished.

The rallies by the civic groups on opposing sides of the ideological spectrum began yesterday.

According to police, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions held a “Peace and Unification Rally” from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. yesterday in Seoul Plaza, with about 10,000 participants voicing their opinions on various issues such as the layoffs at Hanjin Heavy Industries.

Straight after the labor group’s rally, Right Korea, a conservative group, held a gathering starting at 6 p.m. in the same spot. Right Korea’s rally to promote education and national values will continue today from 2 p.m., with 5,000 people expected.

Another conservative group, the Korea Parent Federation, said it will hold a rally today in front of Deoksu Palace to call for the eradication of illegal demonstrations such as the Bus for Hope rallies. About 300 participants are expected to join.

Meanwhile, the KCTU scheduled another rally in downtown Seoul, near those of the conservative groups. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Cheonggye Plaza.

Perhaps a reflection of widening social divisions in the country, President Lee Myung-bak’s message for Liberation Day this year will focus on harmony and unity of the nation, the Blue House said.

Lee will stress the importance of finding a new development model for the market economy amid global challenges stemming from climate change, financial and fiscal crises, jobless growth, a widening wealth gap and polarization, said presidential spokesman Park Jeong-ha.

“Lee will urge the nation to build a warm-hearted society where members will care for each other,” Park said.

The country’s vision on free trade agreements and inter-Korean issues, as well as Korea-Japan relations for the future, will also be highlighted in this year’s Liberation Day address, Park said.

올 광복절도 '보수VS진보'로 찢긴 대한민국

모두 하나가 돼 일본의 식민지 지배로부터 해방을 축하해야 할 올해 광복절 역시 진보와 보수가 각자만의 구호를 외치는 찢겨진 대한민국이 될 것으로 보인다.

특히 진보와 보수단체는 서울의 심장부인 서울광장과 청계광장 등에서 유사한 시간대에 집회를 열 예정이어서 물리적 충돌 가능성도 배제할 수 없는 상황이다.

14일 경찰에 따르면 민주노총은 이날 오전 11시부터 오후 6시까지 전국노동자 평화통일대회를 열 예정이다.

진보적 색채의 민주노총은 약 1만명이 참가한 가운데 한진중공업 정리해고 철회 등 현안에 대해 목소리를 높일 계획이다.

이 집회가 끝나는 오후 6시께부터 같은 장소에서 라이트코리아가 '광복66주년 교육과 나라 바로 세우기 국민대회' 전야제를 준비 중이다.

집회 인원은 약 600명 정도로 예상되고 있지만 민주노총과 라이트코리아의 색채가 워낙 달라 물리적 충돌이 빚어지지 않을까하는 우려가 나오고 있다.

또 민주노총의 행사가 진행 중인 시각에 서울광장 인근 대한문 앞에서는 보수단체인 어버이연합이 '희망버스 등 불법시위 척결 및 대한민국 바로 세우기 대회'를 진행할 예정이다.

집회 참가 인원은 300명 정도로 예상되지만 이 단체는 부산에서 최근 열린 3차 희망버스 행사를 저지하기 위해 일부 물리적인 행동에까지 나설 만큼 강성이어서 경찰 측도 긴장하고 있다.

같은 날 오후 5시부터는 진보단체인 민중의 힘이 전쟁기념관 앞에서 고엽제 진상규명 촉구대회를, 30여개 진보 정당과 시민사회단체가 모인 '한반도 평화를 위한 8.15자주통일대회 추진위원회'는 오후 9시 여의도 문화마당에서 문화제를 연다.

광복절 당일에도 진보와 보수 단체가 근처에서 민감한 시국 행사를 각각 진행한다.

라이트코리아는 이날 오후 2시께 전날과 유사한 행사를 서울광장에서 벌인다. 인원은 14일 600명에서 광복절에는 5천명 수준까지 늘어날 것으로 보인다.

민주노총은 오전 10시부터 청계광장에서 8·15 통일대회를 연다.

등록금넷 역시 시내에서 반값등록금 실현을 위한 촛불 문화제를 진행할 계획이다.

경찰청 관계자는 "14~15일에 진보ㆍ보수단체의 다양한 기념집회가 서울광장과 청계광장 등 가까운 곳에서 열려 물리적 충돌이 일어나거나 과거처럼 도로행진 등 불법행위가 벌어질 수도 있다"면서 "집회와 시위의 자유는 최대한 보장하되 불법 행위에는 '무관용 원칙'에 따라 엄정히 대응하겠다"고 말했다.
