Propaganda from North available on smartphones

North Korea is expanding its propaganda services to mobile phones today, the country’s official propaganda Web site Uriminzokkiri announced yesterday.

“For the 66th anniversary of our independence, we are starting Uriminzokkiri’s mobile homepage service,” the announcement said. “The Web site can be reached through www.uriminzokkiri.com on smartphones. We hope this service is extensively used.”

The North Korean site features a variety of multimedia on the regime, which is aimed at South Korea, though it cannot be accessed due to government censorship.

Uriminzokkiri’s online home page features news and video clips from its official broadcaster and news agency, as well as links to North Korean songs and cuisine.

The Web site also started a new link yesterday, leading viewers to UCC (user created content) videos and pictures. The videos and pictures were described on Uriminzokkiri to have been made by students and other citizens in North Korea.

The mobile site is expected to feature similar material starting today, following the introduction of RSS feeds for its readers last month. North Korea also runs Facebook and Twitter accounts with variations of the word Uriminzokkiri, which means “among our people” in Korean.

All accounts, including both PC and smartphone versions of the Web site, are blocked by the government in South Korea.

北매체, 체제선전에 스마트폰까지 활용

'우리민족끼리' 모바일홈페이지 개설…UCC코너도 구축

북한 매체가 스마트폰 등 모바일 기기를 이용해 접속할 수 있는 사이트를 개설해 체제선전에 활용하고 나섰다.

북한의 대남 웹사이트인 '우리민족끼리'는 14일 홈페이지에 "조국해방 66돌을 맞으며 모바일 홈페이지 봉사를 시작합니다"고 밝혔다.

스마트폰으로 접속하는 모바일 홈페이지 주소는 'www.uriminzokkiri.com'이며 기사, 시사만평, 사진, 추천사이트 등의 서비스가 제공될 예정이다.

우리민족끼리는 트위터, 페이스북 등 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 도입하고 지난달 최신 콘텐츠를 자동으로 받을 수 있는 'RSS피드 서비스'(맞춤형 정보배달 서비스)를 시작한 데 이어 모바일 홈페이지까지 영역을 확대했다.

그러나 모바일 홈페이지는 국내에서는 '불법정보(사이트)'로 분류돼 있기 때문에 일반인이 접속해 내용을 확인하기 어렵다.

앞서 북한의 민족화해협의회가 운영하는 웹사이트인 '려명'이 2009년 5월 휴대전화로 접속할 수 있는 모바일 홈페이지를 개설한 바 있다.

또 우리민족끼리는 이날 홈페이지에 UCC(손수 제작 동영상) 코너를 신설했다.

14일 오전까지 이 코너에는 북한의 학생과 시민이 제작한 것으로 소개되는 동영상 3편과 사진 2장이 올라와 있다.

평양연극영화대학의 박창일 학생이 제작한 '아리랑 처녀들의 출근길'이라는 제목의 동영상은 집단체조 공연인 '아리랑'에 출연하는 젊은 여성들이 웃으면서 출근하는 장면과 아리랑 공연 모습을 담고 있다.

또 평양시 외국어학원의 전일철 학생이 촬영한 '웃음바다 개선청년공원'은 평양 내 놀이공원인 개선청년공원에서 젊은이들이 각종 놀이기구를 즐기는 장면을 소개하고 있으며 또다른 동영상은 대동강 기슭의 양각도호텔, 평양대극장 등의 전경을 담았다.

사진 2장의 경우 평양 시내 중학생들이 찍었으며 한 여학생이 노트북을 사용하는 모습과 학생들이 강원도 송도원의 해수욕장에서 야영하는 장면을 각각 담았다.

우리민족끼리가 스마트폰용 모바일 홈페이지와 UCC 코너 등을 만든 것은 영상과 사진 등을 체제선전에 활용하고 폐쇄적 사회인 북한의 대외적 이미지를 개선하려는 의도를 반영한 것으로 보인다.
