DAEGU - Defending champion and world record holder Usain Bolt was disqualified from the men’s 100-meter final at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu after a false start in the race he was expected to win.

The 25-year-old Jamaican tore off his shirt after hearing a second gun signifying a false start. He left the track bare-chested and watched his World title taken by compatriot Yohan Blake, who won the event with 9.92 seconds.

American Walter Dix came in second at 10.08 seconds, while Kim Collins of St. Kitts and Nevis took third with 10.09 seconds.

Bolt was a favorite in the race because his main rivals were out of the competition due to injuries and drug-test failures.

Most analysts thought the big question was not whether Bolt would win the gold in the 100 meter, but whether he would break his own world record.

The Jamaican sprinter set the world record of 9.58 seconds at the previous Worlds in Berlin two years ago.

He topped the first round of 100-meter qualification on Saturday with a comfortable 10.10 seconds to reach yesterday’s semifinals, which he also finished in 10.05 seconds.

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s final event, Ibrahim Jeilan of Ethiopia won the men’s 10,000 meters at 27 minutes,13.81 seconds and American Brittney Reese topped the women’s long jump event with a distance of 6.82 meters.

Russia’s Valeriy Borchin successfully defended his gold medal with 1 hour, 19 minutes and 56 seconds in the men’s 20-kilometer race, while Kim Hyun-sub became the first Korean athlete at the Daegu Worlds to finish in the top 10 after clocking 1 hour, 21 minutes and 17 seconds.
