Third time a charm for 20-km race walker Kaniskina

DAEGU - Olga Kaniskina of Russia won her third straight gold medal in the women’s 20-kilometer race walk at the World Championships in Athletics yesterday to break the so-called “curse of the cover” that has been the talk of the town in Daegu.

This refers to the fact that all the other stars to appear on the cover of the championships’ daily program - Steve Hooker, Usain Bolt, Damon Robles and Elena Isinbeyava - have fallen flat at the Worlds.

“Thankfully no one told me about this before the race, they only told me after,” Kaniskina said. “I didn’t know about it, but it was a good decision to put me on the cover.”

The 26-year-old Kaniskina secured her victory in 1 hour, 29 minutes and 42 seconds, beating China’s Liu Hong by 18 seconds in a steamy morning race. Another Russian, Anisya Kirdyapkina, finished third. Korea’s Jeon Yong-eun ended in 26th place.

“Compared to [the previous two Worlds in] Osaka and Berlin, this race was very difficult,” Kaniskina said. “The plan was to go with the group for the first half and then to come out fast, but until the very end of the race, I was not sure about my victory.”

She moved into the lead at the 5-kilometer mark and was soon joined by compatriots Kirdyapkina and Vera Sokolova, the world record holder at 1:25:08.

Liu, bronze medalist at the 2009 Worlds, joined the leading group at the halfway point to make it a four-horse race but Kaniskina accelerated from the 14-kilometer mark to win.

Her victory also put the end to the “curse of cover.”

On Saturday, the first day of competition, Australian pole vaulter Steve Hooker was featured as the program’s cover model, but the defending Olympic and world champion was dumped out of the event after failing to clear even one jump.

The second day was highlighted by Jamaican sprint king Usain Bolt, who was disqualified from the 100-meter final for a false start. Misfortune continued on Monday for 110-meter hurdles world-record holder Dayron Robles. The Cuban was disqualified despite finishing first in the race as the IAAF ruled he had obstructed China’s Liu Xiang when jumping over the final hurdles.

Russia’s pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva was not exempt from the bad luck. The world-record holder and two-time world champion finished a disappointing sixth place after only managing 4.65 meters on Tuesday.

Yesterday ranked as something of a rest day at the Worlds, with the women’s 20-kilometer race walk the only event scheduled early in the morning.

A full program of athletics resumes today at Daegu Stadium with six finals in the offing. The three women’s finals come in the 1,500 meters, the 400-meter hurdles and the triple jump, while the men battle it out in the 400-meter hurdles, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the high jump.

In addition, South Africa’s Caster Semenya will begin her attempt to defend her 800-meter title after winning a dispute over her gender, while male javelin thrower Jung Sang-jin will attempt to qualify as part of Korea’s already failed target of getting 10 athletes in as many finals.

카니스키나 앞에 '표지 모델의 저주'는 없었다

‘표지의 저주’도 경보 여왕의 힘찬 발걸음을 멈추지 못했다.

　올가 카니스키나(26·러시아)가 31일 대구 시내에서 벌어진 세계육상선수권대회 여자 20㎞ 경보 결승에서 금메달을 차지했다. 2007년 오사카, 2009년 베를린 대회를 휩쓴 데 이어 대구에서 3회 연속 정상에 올라 세계 최강의 자리를 굳혔다.

　대회 개막 닷새째인 31일에는 여자 경보 20㎞ 한 경기만 열렸다. 대회조직위원회가 이날 펴낸 안내 책자 ‘데일리 프로그램’의 표지가 카니스키나여서 더 큰 관심이 쏠렸다. 전날까지 이 책자의 표지 모델로 나선 선수들이 모두 약속이나 한 듯 부진했기 때문이다.

완주 직후 탈진해 쓰러지는 전영은.　개막일인 지난달 27일 표지에 실린 2009년 베를린 대회 남자 장대높이뛰기 우승자 스티븐 후커(호주)는 예선 탈락했다. 28일과 29일 각각 표지를 장식한 세계기록 보유자 우사인 볼트(자메이카·남자 100m)와 다이론 로블레스(쿠바·남자 110m 허들)는 실격됐다. 30일 여자 장대높이뛰기 스타 옐레나 이신바예바(러시아)까지 메달 획득에 실패하자 ‘표지의 저주’라는 말까지 나왔다.

　카니스키나에겐 징크스가 통하지 않았다. 그는 15㎞ 지점부터 놀라운 스피드와 지구력을 뽐냈다. 1시간29분42초로 결승선을 통과해 류훙(중국·1시간30분00초)과 아니샤 키르드야프키나(러시아·1시간30분13초)를 여유 있게 따돌렸다. 세계기록(1시간25분08초) 보유자인 베라 소콜로바(러시아·1시간32분13초·11위)도 카니스키나를 따라잡지 못했다.

　카니스키나는 남자 경보 20㎞에서 대회 2회 연속 우승을 이룬 발레리 보르친과 함께 러시아 경보를 이끄는 대들보다. 2006년 유럽선수권 2위에 오르며 강자로 떠올랐고 2008년 베이징 올림픽에 이어 대구에서 세계선수권 3회 연속 우승을 달성했다. 키 1m60㎝, 몸무게 43㎏으로 체격이 다소 왜소하지만 경기를 영리하게 운영하고 승부욕이 남다른 게 강점이다. 2009년엔 러시아 최고 여성 선수에 뽑혀 드미트리 메드베데프 대통령으로부터 꽃다발을 받기도 했다.

　한국의 전영은(23·부천시청)은 26위에 그쳤으나 내년 런던 올림픽 출전권을 따냈다. 올 시즌 개인 최고기록인 1시간35분52초로 결승선을 통과해 올림픽 B기준기록(1시간38분00초)을 넘어섰다.
