LG ready to lead global 3-D TV market next year


BERLIN - LG will claim the No. 1 spot in the global market for 3-D TVs next year, according to Havis Kwon, the executive vice president of LG Electronics’ home entertainment division.

“The market for 3-D TVs will grow explosively next year due to technological advancements and wider content distribution,” Kwon told reporters on Friday.

LG has seen stellar growth in this sector in the last six months, making the top spot an attainable goal, he added. He was speaking on the sidelines of the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) consumer electronics show that wraps up in Berlin on Wednesday.

According to market researcher DisplaySearch, LG’s share of the world market was just 5.6 percent in the fourth quarter of last year. This grew to 8.3 percent in the first three months of this year and 12.4 percent in the second quarter.

But LG still trails Samsung Electronics and Sony, which owned respective stakes of 34.4 percent and 17.5 percent in the latest quarter.

One of the reasons LG is confident it can usurp both is the companies’ contrasting fortunes.

Samsung’s share rose by a mere 0.4 percent on-quarter while Sony’s nosedived from 27.1 percent over the same period.

Kwon said this indicates that consumers are favoring the technology used in its 3-D glasses over that of its rivals. LG, Toshiba, Phillips and Sharp have all adopted film-type patterned retarder technology for their passive glasses, making them lighter and cheaper than the active shutter glasses used by companies like Samsung and Sony.

The battle to dominate 3-D has been heating up between the two camps as each strives to make their technology the world standard. Against this backdrop, LG announced earlier this week that it will cooperate with Phillips and Sharp to produce smart TVs by jointly developing software.

Kwon said 3-D TVs will abandon their reliance on glasses - but not for a few years.

“3-D TV should eventually go glasses-free, maybe in three or four years time,” he said.

When asked to comment on Toshiba’s new 55-inch 3-D TV, which does not require special glasses and which was featured at the show, he said this kind of technology is still in its infancy. “While the technology works on small sets, there are still limitations that must be overcome for larger 3-D TVs.”

Kwon said LG was already making preparations in case Apple decides to enter the TV business next year, as some media have speculated.

“Apple is a feared rival and, if it jumps into the TV industry, there will certainly be a lot of changes in the market,” he said. “However, no company can ever claim a 100 percent market share, no matter how good they are.”

Google launched Google TV in May of last year with Sony in charge of television sets and Logitech responsible for set-top boxes. But reviews so far have been mediocre.

권희원 "LG, 내년 3D TV 세계 1위 하겠다"

수량 기준 연간 점유율 25~30% 목표

LG전자[066570] HE(홈엔터테인먼트) 사업본부장 권희원 부사장은 유럽 최대 가전 전시회 'IFA 2011'이 열리는 독일 베를린에서 지난 2일(현지시각) 저녁 기자간담회를 하고 "내년 (수량 기준으로) 3D TV 세계 시장 점유율 1위를 달성하겠다"고 밝혔다.

시장조사 전문업체인 디스플레이서치에 따르면 2분기 3D TV 시장 규모는 491만대로, 전분기(208만대) 대비 136%나 성장한 가운데 업체별로는 매출액 기준으로 삼성전자[005930](34.4%), 소니(17.5%), LG전자(12.4%), 파나소닉(9.9%) 순이었다.

권 부사장은 "3D TV 시장의 폭발적인 성장세와 필름패턴 편광안경(FPR) 방식의 인기로 볼 때 연말께 LG전자의 시네마 3D TV가 수량 기준으로 전체 3D TV 시장의 20% 이상을 차지할 것"이라며 "내년 시장 점유율 25~30%를 유지하면 세계 1위가 될 수 있다"고 설명했다.

이번 IFA 전시회에도 삼성전자가 채택한 셔터안경(SG) 방식이 아닌 FPR 방식의 3D TV를 도시바와 필립스가 처음 선보이는 등 우군이 늘어나고 있다는 것이다.

LG전자는 이를 통해 'LG[003550] = 3D 리더' 이미지를 확고히 하고, 전략적 제휴 및 소프트웨어 경쟁력 강화로 스마트 TV 사업을 선도할 방침이다.

권 부사장은 "'스마트는 기본, 3D는 대세'로, 차별화된 사용 편의성을 제공하는 스마트 기능을 프리미엄 제품에 탑재하고, 초대형 이벤트를 이어가면 내년 3D TV 분야에서 세계 1위에 오르고 이를 기반으로 전체 TV 시장에서의 세계 1위 전략도 세울 수 있다"고 말했다.

이를 위해 LG전자는 프리미엄에서 보급형까지 3D 풀 라인업을 갖춰 전체 TV 모델 가운데 3D TV의 비중을 70%까지 높이고 LG디스플레이[034220], LG화학[051910], LG이노텍과의 기술개발 협력 체제를 강화하기로 했다.

또 스마트 사업을 선도하기 위해 독자 개발한 플랫폼을 개방하고 지역별로 특화된 프리미엄 콘텐츠를 공급하는 한편 LG디스플레이와 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 및 초고화질(UD) 디스플레이, 무안경 3D TV 개발에 나서 내년 대화면 OLED TV를 출시할 예정이다.
