Ryu Kwon-ha, former CEO of the Korea JoongAng Daily, has been appointed president of the Korea Adenauer Academic Exchange Association (KAVKAS).

The association on Friday announced that it appointed Ryu, a visiting professor at Jeonbuk National University's media and communication studies department, as its next president during its regular general meeting. He will serve as the president for a two-year term starting in 2024.

Ryu formerly served as the president of the Korea Foreign Language Newspaper Association and worked as a journalist and a correspondent in Berlin for the JoongAng Ilbo.

"As the president, I hope to host seminars that could boost interactions between Korean and German scholars, especially where they can discuss different policies, such as labor, that Korea could benchmark," Ryu told the Korea JoongAng Daily.

KAVAKS is an academic exchange organization comprised of scholars and experts who received doctoral degrees through scholarships from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Germany.

Ryu received a Ph.D. in German studies at the University of Wuppertal University.

The association hosts lectures and seminars on different aspects and policies of Germany and all of Europe, including education, welfare and labor.
