Religious leaders to visit Pyongyang

South Korean religious leaders will make a rare joint trip to North Korea this week with permission from the South Korean government, the Ministry of Unification said yesterday.

The 24-member delegation representing the country’s seven largest religious groups, including Roman Catholics, Protestants and Buddhists, will fly to Pyongyang via the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang on Wednesday, the ministry said.

While staying in Pyongyang for four days, the religious leaders and their staff are scheduled to meet with their North Korean counterparts in such places as Pyongyang and Mount Baekdu, which borders China, according to the ministry.

“The government allowed the religious leaders’ trip in consideration of their contribution to inter-Korean exchanges and aspiration for peace on the Korean Peninsula,” a ministry official in charge of the permission said.

Experts say the rare visit by South Korea’s religious leaders will help ease high tensions between the two Koreas.

Despite denials from the Korean Conference of Religion for Peace, the organizer of the visit, some have raised the possibility that the delegation may meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on its visit.

The trip is the latest of a series of visits to North Korea by South Korean cultural and religious officials.

South Korean conductor Chung Myung-whun returned to Seoul on Thursday from North Korea, where he signed a letter of intent with North Korean musicians to push for regular joint performances of an inter-Korean symphony orchestra.

Earlier this month, the ministry also allowed officials from South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect to visit the North, the first religious trip since ties fell to the lowest level in decades after the North’s two deadly attacks on the South last year.

Meanwhile, Yu Woo-ik, who took office as minister of unification earlier on Monday, is scheduled to hold a dinner meeting with religious leaders at a Seoul hotel.

류우익, 방북 7대종단 대표에 '역할' 주문

류우익 통일부장관이 취임 당일인 19일 첫 행보로 7대 종단 대표들과 만났다.

각계의 의견을 듣고 소통을 강화한다는 취지에서 이뤄진 만남이었지만 오는 21일 방북을 앞둔 7대 종단 대표들과의 만남이었다는 점에서 충분히 시선을 끌었다.

류 장관은 이날 서울 중구 코리아나호텔에서 만찬을 겸한 간담회에서 종교계 수장들에게 북한에 대한 설득을 우회적으로 주문했다.

"남북 간에 정치ㆍ군사적으로 어려움이 있어도 종교단체 수장들께서 그런 차원을 넘어 지도해달라"고 당부했다.

또 "정부 입장에서는 북한이 도발하고 핵실험을 하는 바람에 분위기가 이렇게 됐다"면서 "그런 것 그만하고 백성을 잘 먹여 살릴 궁리를 함께하면 좋지 않겠느냐는 이야기를 (북측에) 전해주면 좋은 일"이라고 했다.

그는 이어 "신뢰를 가져야 한다"면서 "그것을 회복하기 위해 그런 일을 저지른 사람들이 잘못됐다고 이야기하고, 앞으로 그런 일을 하지 말자고 이야기하면 최소한의 신뢰가 만들어진다"고 강조했다.

직접적인 표현은 하지 않았지만 천안함ㆍ연평도 사건과 관련해 북측에 촉구하는 책임 있는 조치를 종교계 대표들을 통해 간접적으로 촉구한 것으로 풀이된다.

김희중 천주교 대주교와 최근덕 성균관장 등은 류 장관에게 "기대가 크다"고 했다. 일부 대표는 "우리가 고도의 정치행위를 할 수는 없다 쳐도 그 정도의 말씀은 전달할 수 있을 것"이라며 종교계의 역할을 강조했다.

한양원 한국민족종교협의회 회장은 "냉전이 끝난 지가 언제인데 우리만 유독 원수로 쳐다보고 하는 것은 동방예의지국답지 못한 것"이라면서 "이번에 가면 이런 얘기를 하려고 한다"고 말했다.

이날 간담회에는 7대 종단 대표인 김희중 천주교 대주교, 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK) 총무인 김영주 목사, 자승 조계종 총무원장, 김주원 원불교 교정원장, 최근덕 성균관장, 임운길 천도교 교령, 한양원 한국민족종교협의회 회장 등이 참석했다.
