United, City stay atop EPL; Suarez punishes

LONDON - Manchester City moved on from the midweek turmoil of Carlos Tevez’s apparent refusal to play with a resounding 4-0 victory at Blackburn in the Premier League on Saturday.

City remains joint top of the standings alongside crosstown rival Manchester United, which struggled to a 2-0 win over Norwich.

Adam Johnson, Mario Balotelli, Samir Nasri and Stefan Savic all scored second-half goals to ensure City kept pace with United, which welcomed Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez back from injury but needed late strikes by Anderson and Danny Welbeck to secure a club record 19th straight league win at Old Trafford.

The two Manchester clubs lead with 19 points from seven games, though United has the better goal difference. Newcastle went to third with 15 points after a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton stretched its unbeaten start to the season. Liverpool won 2-0 at Everton to go to 13 points.

In other matches Saturday, Aston Villa earned its first home victory of the season with a 2-0 result against Wigan and Nicklas Bendtner sparked Sunderland to a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion.

Tevez was suspended for two weeks on Thursday over his apparent refusal to come off the bench during City’s 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League the day before, with manager Roberto Mancini saying the Argentina striker would never play for the club again.

But even with Sergio Aguero sustaining what appeared to be a groin problem, City’s offense never lagged as Johnson curled in the 56th-minute opener.

Italy striker Balotelli volleyed home from Nasri three minutes later and celebrated by showing support for Mancini with a hug of the Italian coach. Nasri scored the third in the 73rd before Savic netted his first goal for City near the close.

United struggled despite the return of Hernandez and Rooney, who still managed to help flick Ryan Giggs’ corner onto the path of Anderson to head home a 68th-minute opener.

Welbeck replaced Hernandez just before the opener and netted his third goal of the week in the 87th as United bounced back from a midweek 3-3 Champions League draw against Basel.

“This was not a good performance, but we were gritty and we never gave in,’’ said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, whose team has not dropped league points at Old Trafford since a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion nearly one year ago. “That is a fantastic quality to have.’’

Luis Suarez largely ensured Liverpool won the 216th Merseyside Derby by scoring a goal and being involved with an opponent’s red card.

Jack Rodwell was sent off for a challenge on Suarez in the 23rd, and the Uruguayan later earned a penalty that Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard saved from Dirk Kuyt.

But the Reds broke through in the 71st through Carroll before Suarez’s fourth league goal sealed Liverpool’s ninth win in its last 12 trips to Goodison Park in England’s longest-running derby.

“Sometimes the extra man works against you and sometimes it works in your favor,’’ said Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, who returned to Goodison Park for the first time since an FA Cup match in 1991 that led to his resignation afterward. “We kept our patience and we are delighted with the result.’’

Bendtner’s first goal for Sunderland since his move from Arsenal came in the 24th from a deflected shot. The Denmark striker then crossed for Ahmed Elmohamady to head in the equalizer two minutes later.

박지성(30·맨체스터 유나이티드·사진)의 별명은 바뀌었다. 그동안 ‘산소탱크’ ‘두 개의 심장’ 등으로 불렸지만 지금은 ‘센트럴 파크’가 귀에 익었다.

　‘센트럴 파크’는 좌우 날개로 뛰던 박지성이 중앙으로 자리를 옮겨서도 훌륭한 경기를 하자 생긴 별명이다. 그리고 국내 팬들은 팀의 중심이라는 뉘앙스를 더했다. 맨체스터 유나이티드(이하 맨유)의 중원을 맡아 붙박이 주전 자리를 굳혔다는 뉴스를 기대했다. 그러나 ‘센트럴 파크’라는 별명에는 박지성이 처한 현실이 빛과 그늘처럼 공존한다.

　2일(한국시간) 영국 맨체스터 올드 트래퍼드에서 열린 맨유와 노리치시티의 2011~2012 잉글랜드 프리미어리그 7라운드. 선발 출전한 박지성은 알렉스 퍼거슨 감독이 입에 침이 마르게 칭찬한 ‘공간 창출 능력’과 ‘전술 이해력’을 마음껏 발휘했다. 첫 임무는 왼쪽 미드필더였다. 후반에는 오른쪽에서 뛰었다. 후반 23분 안데르손의 선제골이 터지자 퍼거슨 감독은 박지성을 중앙으로 옮겼다. 박지성은 세 차례나 자리를 바꿨지만 흔들림 없이 임무를 완수했다.

　만족스러운 경기였지만 현지 언론의 평가는 엇갈렸다. 스카이스포츠는 박지성에게 팀 내에서 둘째로 높은 평점 7을 줬다. 하지만 맨체스터 지역지인 맨체스터 이브닝 뉴스의 평가는 팀 최하인 5점이었다. 맨체스터 이브닝뉴스는 박지성을 포지션 경쟁자인 애슐리 영과 비교했다. “전반적으로 애슐리 영의 역할을 대신하는 데 실패했다”는 게 맨체스터 이브닝뉴스의 평가였다.

　퍼거슨 감독은 박지성을 칭찬했지만 “영은 발목 통증이 있어 결장했다. 하지만 우리 팀에는 라이언 긱스·박지성·발렌시아 같은 훌륭한 대체 자원이 있다”는 말도 했다. 박지성은 보조 전력이고, 주전 왼쪽 미드필더는 영이라고 공언한 것이다. 애스턴 빌라에서 뛰다 맨유로 이적한 영은 리그 6경기에서 2골·5도움을 기록하고 있다. 박지성이 또 한 번 험난한 경쟁에 직면했음을 확인한 셈이다.
