Korean pop stars perform at MSG

NEW YORK SM Entertainment artists dazzled 15,000 fans at Madison Square Garden in a sold-out New York concert Sunday evening.

SM Town Live World Tour in New York was the last leg of SM’s tour, which launched in Seoul before going to Los Angeles, Tokyo, Shanghai and Paris earlier this year.

Tickets for the New York concert were sold out within an hour, according to SM Entertainment, similar to its June concert in Paris that sold out within 15 minutes.

Artists that performed were SM Entertainment’s top K-pop stars, including Girls’ Generation, TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee, f(X), BoA and Kangta, the former leader of H.O.T.

The concert started at 7:30 p.m., but diehard fans waited between 31st to 33rd Street around Madison Square Garden as early as four hours beforehand in anticipation.

The concert launched with the newest addition to the tour, f(X), who opened the show with “LA chA TA.” The show ran three and a half hours after some 50 songs, including an ensemble performance of H.O.T.’s “Hope.”

Concert highlights included the first on-stage performance of the English version of “The Boys” by Girls’ Generation, which was produced by Teddy Riley. SM Entertainment simultaneously released an English and Korean version of the Girls’ Generation song on YouTube on Oct. 19, and it became an instant hit with almost 13 million combined views and counting.

TVXQ sent legions of female fans into a frenzy when they, suspended by wire midair, descended on stage from above. Many fans followed their dance moves.

According to a representative from SM Entertainment, more than 70 percent of the concertgoers were non-Asians, with many of them able to sing along to the Korean lyrics. Many U.S. fans cried out “I love you!” in Korean.

Jennifer Gunter, who flew from Canada to see the performance, said, “It’s like a dream come true to see the K-pop artists that I have been only able to see on YouTube in real life. Someday, I really want to go visit the homeland of K-pop, Seoul.”

Madison Square Garden, located in midtown Manhattan, has been the concert venue for many famous singers, including Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Beyonce and Lady Gaga, and is considered a dream stage for many aspiring world-class artists.

한국 아이돌 가수들이 23일(현지시간) 밤 미국 팝 문화의 메카 뉴욕 매디슨 스퀘어 가든을 ‘점령’했다. 동방신기·소녀시대·수퍼주니어·샤이니·f(X)와 보아 등 SM엔터테인먼트 소속 아이돌 가수가 총출동했다.

1만5000석을 가득 메운 관객은 아이돌 그룹이 등장할 때마다 환호를 지르며 각종 피켓을 흔들었다. 한국말로 “사랑해요”라고 외치는 푸른 눈의 소녀 팬도 적지 않았다. 소녀시대나 동방신기가 공연을 할 때는 자리에서 일어나 춤을 따라 추기도 했다.

캐나다에서 이 공연을 보기 위해 금요일 저녁 뉴욕에 왔다는 제니퍼 군터양은 “유튜브로만 접했던 K-팝 가수의 공연을 현장에서 직접 보니 꿈만 같다”며 “언젠가 K-팝의 고향 서울에 꼭 가보고 싶다”고 말했다.

　소녀시대는 글로벌 시장을 겨냥해 만든 곡 ‘더 보이즈(The Boys)’를 처음 무대에 올렸다. 이 곡은 마이클 잭슨의 프로듀서 테디 라일리가 소녀시대를 위해 작곡한 작품으로 다음달 미국을 비롯한 전 세계에서 음반으로 발매될 예정이다.

공연이 펼쳐진 매디슨 스퀘어 가든은 엘비스 프레슬리, 마이클 잭슨, 비욘세, 레이디 가가, 테일러 스위프트, 저스틴 비버 등이 공연한 팝 스타의 꿈의 무대로 불리는 곳이다. 아시아 가수의 콘서트가 매디슨 스퀘어 가든의 메인 공연장인 아레나에서 열린 건 이번이 처음이다. 주최 측에 따르면 공연 티켓은 발매를 시작한 지 한 시간도 안 돼 거의 매진됐을 정도로 폭발적인 인기를 끌었다.

　이날 매디슨 스퀘어 가든 주변은 공연 시작 서너 시간 전부터 몰려든 팬들로 북새통을 이뤘다. 오후 7시 30분에 시작된 공연도 11시까지 쉼 없이 숨가쁘게 이어졌다. 동방신기는 와이어로 몸을 매단 뒤 하늘에서 등장하는 퍼포먼스를 펼쳐 팬들의 환호를 받기도 했다.

서울에서 시작해 로스앤젤레스 ·도쿄·상하이·파리를 거쳐온 SM타운의 월드 투어는 이날 뉴욕에서 대미를 장식했다.
