Stem cell therapy for pets

Researchers from Konkuk University revealed yesterday that they had developed a way to treat rare and incurable diseases in pets like dogs and cats using stem cells transplanted from animal fat tissues.

The extraction process for stem cells from fat tissues is more convenient than extracting from bone marrow because fat cells contain 1,000 times more stem cells than bone marrow cells. Konkuk University also unveiled the Animal Stem Cell Therapy and Research Center in Konkuk Biotech to perform the newly developed treatment.

Konkuk University Professor Jung Pyung-hyun said he believes research on stem cell treatment on animals could lead to the development of human treatments.
