도시에서 벌이 살 수 있어야 인간도 버티지 않겠나
대형식품업체 이름을 딴 ‘C정식’ ‘P세트’란 말이 있다. 해당 브랜드의 쌀밥•국•반찬 등 즉석식품으로 차린 밥상을 가리키는 우스갯소리다. 현대 도시인들은 이렇게 공장제품으로 식탁을 채운다. 농산물을 다듬고 조리해 먹는 일은 어느새 사치가 됐다.그 대안으로 나온 것이 요즘 하나의 문화로 자리 잡은 텃밭 가꾸기다. 자칭 도시농부인 친구를 따라 텃밭에 가봤더니 이런 호사가 있나 싶었다. 세 평 남짓한 공간이 벌레 먹은 채소로 가득했다. 농약을 쓰지 않아 벌레가 살 수 있다는 증거다. 아파트 베란다가 채소밭으로 변하는가 하면 수경재배도 등장했다. 이른바 도시농업이다. 건강을 위해 먹거리를 가까운 곳에서 친환경적으로 손수 재배해 얻자는 생활개선운동의 일환이다.
도시농업의 백미는 도시양봉이다. 도심에서 벌을 쳐서 직접 꿀을 얻는 일은 그 자체로 매력적이지 않은가. 말로만 듣던 꿀벌의 생활사를 코앞에서 관찰하고 공원이나 정원 등 주변 생태계를 파악할 수 있다는 점은 덤이다. 서울시청 옥상에서도 지난봄 꿀을 수확했지만 도시양봉은 지난 몇 년 새 전 세계 대도시에 유행처럼 번졌다.
일본 도쿄에선 몇 년 전 ‘긴자(銀座) 꿀벌프로젝트’라는 이름으로 시작했다. 원래 자민당사 옥상에서 하려다 경비 문제로 긴자 나카다초 사회문화회관 옥상에 벌통을 들여놨다. 꿀벌 비행반경인 4㎞ 안에 황궁, 하마리큐 정원, 히비야 공원 등 녹지가 있다. 살충제도 거의 치지 않아 깨끗한 꿀이 모인다. 이런 도심이 농약을 치는 농촌보다 오히려 더 환경친화적일 수 있다. 매년 800㎏ 넘게 수확한다. 인근 백화점•호텔•과자점에서 이를 원료로 과자를 만든다. 심지어 콘크리트 도시의 상징인 미국 뉴욕 맨해튼에도 벌통이 400개를 넘는다. 유서 깊은 월도프 아스토리아 호텔 옥상에도 벌들이 웽웽거린다.
도시양봉이 가장 성한 대도시는 어제(현지시간) 2012 여름 올림픽이 개막한 영국 런던이다. 뉴욕의 8배인 3200여 개의 벌통이 도심에 있다고 한다. 재미난 것은 가장 삭막할 것 같은 금융기관 건물의 옥상에서 가장 친자연적인 꿀벌 치기가 이뤄진다는 점이다. 세계 4위 증권거래소인 런던증권거래소, 영국 중앙은행인 영국은행 옥상은 벌통 천지다. 서울로 치면 명동이나 여의도에 해당하는 곳이다. 도심 백화점•호텔 옥상에서도 꿀벌들이 노래를 한다. 사실상 도시 전역이 벌 천지다. 100개가 넘는 시내 공원이 이들의 숨통을 터준다.
꿀벌이 이렇게 생존한다는 건 인간도 건강하게 살 수 있는 환경이란 증거다. 아무리 대도시에 살아도 인간은 녹색지대에서 숨 쉴 권리가 있다. 물론 양봉도시에서 열리는 이번 올림픽에선 양궁 같은 야외경기 도중 한참 조준 중인 선수에게 꿀벌이 다가와 웽웽거리는 해프닝이 생길 수도 있겠지만.
