나이 아흔넷에 사랑에 빠진 슈미트는 행복한 노인
헬무트 슈미트 전 서독 총리가 사랑에 빠졌다. 남자와 여자가 사랑에 빠지는 것은 봄이 되면 꽃이 피고, 가을이 되면 낙엽이 지는 것처럼 당연한 자연의 섭리다. 사랑에 빠진 슈미트 전 총리가 화제인 것은 그의 유명세도 유명세지만 나이 탓이 클 것이다. 독일이 통일되기 전인 1974년부터 8년간 서독 총리를 지낸 슈미트는 올해 나이 아흔넷이다. 망백(望百)이 넘은 나이에 새로운 연인과 사랑에 빠진다는 것이 분명 흔한 일은 아니다.사랑에는 나이 제한이 없다. 74세의 괴테는 19세 소녀 울리케와 사랑에 빠졌다. 얼마 전 한국에서는 70대 시인의 10대 소녀에 대한 연정을 그린 소설과 영화, ‘은교’가 화제였다. 슈미트는 2년 전 상처(喪妻)를 했다. 그리고 57년간 슈미트의 곁에서 개인비서로 일해온 루스 로아(79)와 사랑에 빠졌다. 둘은 현재 동거 중이다. 괴테에 비하면 스캔들이랄 것도 없다.
슈미트는 지금도 독일 내 각종 여론조사에서 ‘가장 존경받는 정치인’ 1위 자리를 놓치지 않고 있다. 그런 그를 이야기할 때 빼놓을 수 없는 것이 담배다. 그는 줄담배를 피우는 골초다. 총리 시절 그는 담배를 피우면서 기자회견을 했다. 담배 때문에 곤욕을 치른 적도 많다. 그럼에도 절대 손에서 담배를 놓는 법이 없다. 지금도 그는 주변 사람들에게 양해를 구하고 공공장소에서도 버젓이 담배를 피운다. 그는 “혹시 노망이 들면 모를까 아직까지는 한 번도 금연을 시도해 본 적이 없다”고 말한다. 확실한 소신파 흡연가다. 금연이 아무리 대세라 할지라도 평균수명 이상 산 나이 든 애연가들만큼은 예외로 인정해줘야 하는 것 아닌가 싶다.
독일인들이 슈미트를 존경하고 좋아하는 이유는 지성과 소신을 겸비하고 있기 때문이다. 그는 대중의 인기에 영합하는 법이 없다. 현직에 있을 때도 그랬고, 지금도 그렇다. 중도좌파인 사민당 출신이면서도 노조의 과도한 권한 확대에는 확실하게 반대했다. 당론을 거스르며 원전 건설에는 찬성했다. ‘담배 피우는 헬무트 슈미트와의 대화’라는 담배 연기 자욱한 텔레비전 프로까지 만들어 지금도 독일인들이 그의 의견에 귀를 기울이고 있는 것은 죽기 전에 그의 지혜를 최대한 뽑아내려면 담배 정도는 눈감아 줘야 하는 것 아니냐는 공감대 때문인지 모른다.
무엇이 과연 행복한 노년인가. 나이가 들수록 스스로에게 자주 묻게 되는 질문이다. 자기 스스로 자신의 삶을 선택할 수 있으면 가장 행복한 것 아닐까. 남이 보기에 엉뚱하고, 한심해 보일지라도 자기가 자기의 삶을 선택하고 결정할 수 있다면 그것처럼 행복한 삶은 없을 것이다. ‘삶에 대한 자기 결정력’ 말이다. 물론 쉽지 않은 일이다. 94세의 나이에도 사랑에 빠질 수 있는 슈미트는 분명 행복한 노인이다.
