A fog of rumors on campaign trail

A campaign trail usually has nasty twists and turns. The most recent in our presidential race is likely to serve a severe blow to Park Geun-hye, presidential candidate from the ruling Saenuri Party, or Ahn Cheol-soo, dean of a Seoul National University graduate school. Ahn’s lawyer claimed he received a phone call from Park’s camp threatening to spill some dirty secrets about Ahn if he announces a run in the presidential race. What Keum Tae-sup, lawyer and de facto spokesman for Ahn, said in a hastily organized press conference was shocking and could have serious repercussions.

Keum said he received a phone call Tuesday morning from Jeong Jung-guil, Park’s public relations officer in the election camp, warning that he would expose one of Ahn’s shady deals and an out-of-wedlock relationship if Ahn runs. Jeong claimed he had evidence of a bribe received by Ahn and of his “other woman.”

If Jeong’s claims are true, Ahn would not only have to reconsider a presidential bid, but he may have to step down from the elite school. His appealing image of cleanness and honesty would be stained. Keum said the accusations were completely groundless. If that is true, Jeong and Park’s camp have more or less tried to blackmail Ahn with a couple of total lies.

Jeong said it was a “friendly call” to warn Keum of rumors going around about Ahn. He denied any bad intentions and just wanted to give some friendly advice to a potential competitor of his own boss.

The phone conversation was not taped so we cannot verify who is telling the complete truth. But what the information suggests is scandalous enough. Even if they are friends, it is inappropriate for Jeong to drop such a suggestion to someone at a rival political camp. Jeong is Park’s de facto point man against Ahn and a former prosecutor specializing in bribery cases.

It is quite low to blackmail someone purely on rumors. If he actually has evidence, Jeong should reveal it. The Saenuri Party is wrong to sidestep the issue, saying that Jeong’s action had nothing to do with the party. The party should seek accountability and live up to its promise of fair play in campaigning. Ahn should also step from behind the veil. This problem is too serious to be dealt with by proxies. If these were slanderous and defamatory claims, he should say so out loud. He should stop playing games and declare whether he will run in the race or not. If he has the guts and capacity, he should step into the center ring and face political challenges like a real contestant.

치졸한 사건이 터졌다. 유력한 대선 후보인 안철수 서울대 융합과학기술대학원장이 새누리당으로부터 출마 포기를 종용하는 협박을 받았다는 주장이다. 안 교수의 사실상 대변인 겸 네거티브 검증 대응을 담당하고 있는 금태섭 변호사가 지난 4일 아침 직접 전화를 받았다고 긴급 기자회견까지 했다.
　금 변호사의 주장에 따르면 문제는 매우 심각하다. 전화로 ‘협박’했다는 사람은 새누리당 박근혜 후보 대선기획단 정준길 공보위원이다. 가장 유력한 후보의 검증 담당 참모가 최대 라이벌이 될 출마 예정자의 비리를 들먹인 셈이다. 내용도 저급하다. 뇌물과 외도다. 내용이 구체적이라는 점도 놀랍다. 뇌물의 경우 정황과 시기, 받은 사람 성(姓)까지 나왔다. 외도 대상이라는 여성의 일부 경력까지 언급됐다.
　이런 내용이 사실이라면 안 교수는 대선 출마는 고사하고, 서울대 대학원장직부터 내놓아야 할 정도다. 그런데 금 변호사가 안 교수에게 확인한 결과 “전혀 사실이 아니다”라고 한다. 사실이 아닐 경우 정준길의 전화는 있을 수 없는 정치적 협박이다.
　물론 정 공보위원의 주장은 다르다. “오랜 친구에게, 갑자기 생각나, 시중에서 들은 얘기를 전달한 것”이라고 했다. 뇌물과 외도 얘기를 한 사실은 인정했다. 하지만 ‘협박’은 아니라고 반박했다. “정치적으로 다른 입장이지만 서로를 잘 이해하고자” 하는 우정이었다고 한다.

　해석의 여지는 있다. 하지만 두 사람의 주장 가운데 일치하는 부분만 보더라도 문제는 심각하다. 아무리 친구 사이라도 정치적으로 대척점에 선 사람이 상대방 후보에 대한 치명적 의혹을 주장하는 전화를 한 것은 부적절하다. 특히 정 위원은 안 교수에 대한 검증 담당이다. 뇌물 의혹과 관련된 수사를 담당한 검사이기도 하다.
　아무리 우정이지만 상대방에서 ‘협박’으로 받아들일 소지가 충분히 있었다. 시중의 뜬소문으로 상대방 후보에게 ‘협박’이란 빌미를 제공했다면 마땅히 책임을 져야 한다. 새누리당은 “당과 무관한 일”이라며 방관할 일이 아니다. 근거가 있다면 명백히 밝혀야 한다. 그렇지 못하다면 정 위원에게 책임을 묻고, 이런 사태에 대해 사과하고 재발 방지를 다짐해야 한다.
　안 교수도 답답하다. 최근 온갖 의혹과 궁금증에도 불구하고 안 교수는 대리인 뒤에 숨어 있을 뿐이다. 이번 사건도 대리인 차원에서 대응할 문제가 아니다. 아무리 허무맹랑한 얘기라 하더라도, 소문이 이렇게 확산된다면 안 교수 본인이 나와 분명히 ‘아니다’고 확인해줄 필요가 있다.
　금 변호사의 주장처럼 이번 사건에 과연 ‘사정기관의 조직적인 뒷조사’와 ‘보이지 않는 거대 권력의 지휘’가 작용했는지도 의문이다. 안 교수 측도 이런 주장의 근거를 밝혀야 한다. 그렇지 못할 경우 최근 각종 의혹에 대한 검증을 회피하기 위한 정치공세로 비판받을 수 있다.
　이제 안 교수가 직접 나서야 할 때가 됐다. 출마 여부도 빨리 밝혀야 한다. 당당히 검증도 받아야 한다. 이젠 진짜 정치인으로, 공개적인 정치에 나서야 한다.
