Election victors need the vanquished

I was surprised by the exit polls of three broadcasters. They were official statistics from the National Election Commission, but the turnout of the voters in their 50s was 89.9 percent. I am in my 50s and I voted, but the turnout was far higher than expected. In the 17th presidential election, 76.6 percent of voters in their 50s went to the polls. For the 16th election, one of the most intense in history, it was 83.7 percent. Except for those who are hospitalized or have limited mobility, nearly everyone seemed to have voted. My son is in college, and he came home the day before the election. I did not ask for whom he voted, and he did not ask me. However, middle-aged voters seem to be far more passionate about the election than the younger generation.

The morning of the Election Day, an 88-year-old man was hit by a train on his way to vote in Wonju, Gangwon. In Changwon, South Gyeongnam, a woman in her 70s suffering a heart attack, collapsed in the garden and died after casting her vote in the cold weather. A relative in his late 80s who was staying with his son’s family went back to his hometown a few days ago to vote. Where did this unprecedented voting boom among seniors originate?

Park Geun-hye earned 15,773,128 votes and Moon Jae-in got 14,692,632 votes. Moon Jae-in lost the election, but he earned 3.2 million votes more than President Lee Myung-bak in 2007. When broadcasters began to report about 9 p.m. that Park Geun-hye was the likely winner, a filmmaker posted on Twitter: “The doomsday is coming on Dec. 21. It is our hope.” Supporters expressed their disappointment on Facebook: “I went to bed, hoping to see a reversal, but it did not change in the morning.” They woke up devastated.

Upon winning the Battle of Waterloo, General Wellington of England said, “There is nothing so dreadful as a great victory - except a great defeat.” King Pyrrhus of Epirus won a battle against the Romans, but suffered serious casualties. “One more such victory would utterly undo us,” he said. We call a victory that brings excessive loss as a result a Pyrrhic victory.

Park Geun-hye was wise to emphasize reconciliation and integration after the victory. “Moon and I share the same devotion toward the Republic of Korea and its people,” she said. The world of power is not all romantic, and a certain leadership group is needed in reality.

But values of generosity and tolerance are greatly appreciated. The defeated candidate and his supporters should celebrate and help the winner. Even the greatest leadership cannot accomplish much without the support of the losers and their followers.

비록 선거관리위원회 최종 집계는 아니더라도 그저께 방송3사 출구조사에서 50대 유권자 투표율이 89.9%로 나온 것에 정말 놀랐다. 나도 50대고 투표도 했지만, 예상을 훌쩍 뛰어넘는 수치다. 17대 대선 50대 투표율(76.6%)은 물론 치열했던 16대(83.7%)도 저리가라다. 병원에 입원 중이거나 다리가 불편한 사람 외에는 모두 총출동하지 않았나 싶다. 혼자 자취를 하는 대학생 아들이 그제 오후 집에 들렀다가 ‘조용히’ 투표를 하고 갔다. 나도 아들도 서로 누구에게 투표했느냐고 묻지 않았다. 그러나 20·30대의 투표 열기는 50대 이상에 비하면 아직 새발의 피인 모양이다.
투표일 아침 강원도 원주시에서는 투표하러 가던 88세 노인이 철길 건널목에서 열차에 치여 숨졌다. 경남 창원시에선 심근경색을 앓던 70대 할머니가 추운 날씨 속에 투표를 마치고 야외 화단에 주저앉아 있다가 병원에 옮겨졌으나 끝내 깨어나지 못했다. 멀리 갈 것도 없이, 자식 집에 머물던 80대 후반의 가까운 집안어른도 며칠 전 “투표를 꼭 해야 한다”며 고향집에 돌아왔다. 18대 대선에 유례없이 세차게 불어 닥친 노풍(老風)의 진원지는 과연 무엇일까.
박근혜 당선인 1577만 3128표, 문재인 낙선인 1469만 2632표. 양쪽으로 쫙 갈라진 득표 수에 희비가 갈리지 않는다면 이상하다. 특히 패자인 문재인 후보가 얻은 표는 2007년 대선에서 승리한 이명박 대통령의 득표(1149만표)보다 320만표나 더 많다. 그래서일까. 19일 밤 9시쯤 방송사들이 ‘박근혜 당선 유력’을 내보내기 시작하자 한 영화감독은 트위터에 “21일 지구가 멸망합니다. 그게 희망이에요”라는 글을 남겼다. 페이스북에도 탄식이 넘쳤다. “자고 나면 혹시 뒤집어질까 해서 일단 잤는데, 아침에 깨보니 똑같더라”는 글도 있었다. 한마디로 ‘멘붕’이었다.
워털루 혈전에서 승리한 영국의 웰링턴 장군은 “패배 다음으로 크나큰 불행은 승리”라는 유명한 말을 남겼다. 고대 그리스의 피로스 왕은 로마군과의 전투에서 피차 막대한 사상자를 내고 이긴 뒤 “이런 승리를 한번 더 거두었다간 우리는 망한다”고 했다. 유명한 ‘상처뿐인 승리(Pyrrhic Victory)’다. 그런 점에서 박근혜 당선인이 어제 “저나 문 후보 모두 대한민국과 국민을 위한 마음만은 같았다고 생각한다”며 화해와 대통합을 강조한 것은 매우 잘한 일이다. 권력의 세계가 낭만 일색일 수 없고 일정한 주도세력이 필요한 것도 현실이지만, 그럴수록 금도(襟度)와 배려라는 미덕이 빛을 발하는 법이다. 패자와 지지층도 승자를 축하하고 일 제대로 하도록 돕자. 아무리 뛰어난 리더십도 팔로어십(followership)의 뒷받침 없이는 이룰 수 있는 게 별로 없다.
