Mexican Open crown goes to Bulgarian

Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov claimed his second career title by edging South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (5) on Sunday morning to win the Mexican Open.

On the women’s side of the tournament, Dominika Cibulkova beat American Christina McHale, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-4.

Dimitrov, seeded fourth in the tournament, needed just under three hours to hold off Anderson and win his first title since last year in Stockholm.

“It’s been a tremendous week for me,” Dimitrov said. “It’s been a great journey; the sun always comes out when you work hard.”

With the win, the 22 year-old Bulgarian will move up to around 16th in the world rankings. Anderson lost his second consecutive final, having been beaten last week at Delray Beach.
