Former short-track champion wins award

Former short track speed skater Park Seung-hi was award the top prize by Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) in an award ceremony on Monday.

At the 61st annual KOC Awards, which are given to athletes who honor Korean sports, Park received her first grand prize for the first time.

Park, 22, won two gold medals - the women’s 1,000-meter short track race and 3,000-meter relay - at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in February, as well as a bronze medal in the women’s 500-meter.

In the Short Track World Championships in March, she took gold in the women’s 500-meter event, silver in the 1,000-meter and bronze in the 1,500-meter. Park switched sports to speed skating in October and is hoping to participate in the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Gangwon.

Rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae and Park Jong-woo, who won the gold medal in bowling at the Incheon Asian Games last year, won runners-up prizes at the event.
