The club started a new marketing campaign last weekend with Pikachu, the fictional character from the Pokemon franchise. The Incheon-based club will now sell merchandise featuring the character and will hold various events featuring it.
The team said that the Pikachu merchandise, which includes hats and T-shirts, will only be sold this season.
According to the Wyverns, Pokemon Korea first contacted the team in June to offer a one-off promotional event, but they decided to expand the partnership.
The Wyverns chose Pikachu because the character appeals to kids, as well as those in their 20s and 30s for whom the character evokes nostalgia.
Pikachu was especially popular in Korea during the late 1990s.
During their game against the KT Wiz on Saturday, the Wyverns held an official welcoming ceremony for Pikachu, and the character performed with special cheerleaders. The Wyverns said Pikachu will mainly appear during weekend games.
There will be also free giveaways Over the weekend, the team gave 1,000 Pikachu sun visors to fans. The giveaway will happen again on Aug. 14, 22 and 23.
Last year, the NC Dinos pulled a similar strategy with Crong, the dinosaur character in the Korean animation “Pororo the Little Penguin.”
