Jeju United edge into top K-League group

Jeju United booked the last spot in the upper group of the K-League Classic’s split system after beating league No. 1 Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors on Sunday.

At the Jeju World Cup Stadium, Jeju beat Jeonbuk 3-2, thanks to Brazilian forward Ricardo Lopes’ goal in the 88th minute.

The victory led Jeju to No. 6 in the league standings at 46 points with 13 wins, 13 losses and seven draws, edging Incheon United by a single point.

Incheon and Jeonnam Dragons have their chances to be in the upper group, but Incheon lost to Seongnam FC 1-0 and Jeonnam was defeated 3-2 against FC Seoul on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Suwon Samsung Bluewings midfielder Yeom Ki-hun became the league’s all-time leader in assists at 71 after setting up three goals in his team’s 4-2 victory against Gwangju FC on Sunday. Shin Tae-yong, now coach of Korea U-23 football team, previously held the record with 68 assists.

Park now No. 2 in prize money ranking

Park Sung-hyun collected her third win in the KLPGA Tour as she won the OK Savings Bank Pak Seri Invitational on Sunday, at the Solmoro Country Club in Yeoju, Gyeonggi.

Park hit 4-under 68 in the final round to finish the event 10-under 206, edging Kim Ji-hyun and Kim Hae-rym by a stroke.

Park, 22, won the Korea Women’s Open in June and KDB Daewoo Securities Classic last month.

After collecting 120 million won ($101,400) with her victory, she is now second in prize money rankings at 637 million won, which is just 133 million won behind money leader Chun In-gee who did not play the event.



Lee captures his first victory of the season

Lee Hyung-joon won the KPGA Korean Tour’s only matchplay event on Sunday to get his first win of the season.

At the Munsingwear Matchplay Championship held at 88 Country Club in Yongin, Gyeonggi, Lee defeated Joo Heung-chol 2 and 1 in the final and collected 200 million won for his victory.

It was Lee’s second win in his career after the 23-year-old claimed Herald KYJ Tour Championship last year.

Meanwhile, Lee Sung-ho finished third after he got 2-up win against Lee Dong-min.
