Busan to host East Asian Football Championship

Korea’s second-largest city of Busan has been picked to host the East Asian football competition this year, organizers of the tournament announced Friday.

The East Asian Football Federation (EAFF), led by Korean football chief Chung Mong-gyu, confirmed the host city and schedule for the 2019 EAFF E-1 Football Championship following its executive committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The E-1 Football Championship is the sport’s biggest tournament in the East Asia region that started in 2003. The 2019 edition will be staged in the southern port city of Busan from Dec. 10 to 18, according to the EAFF, with the Asiad Main Stadium and Gudeok Stadium serving as the competition venues.

“I’m happy to announce the host city and schedule for the 2019 EAFF E-1 Championship, which will be hosted by South Korea for the first time in six years,” Chung said. “Since Busan actively worked to be named the host of the tournament, I believe it will be a successful event.”

The biennial tournament features four teams each for the men’s and women’s campaigns, and has a round-robin format. This year’s men’s competition pits South Korea with Japan, China and Hong Kong, while the women’s side features South Korea, China, Japan and North Korea.

The Taeguk Warriors are the defending champions of the men’s competition and have won four titles total, the most among the participants. On the women’s side, North Korea are the dominant forces with three titles, including their 2017 triumph in Japan.

The organizers said that the 2019 EAFF E-1 Championship will open with the women’s match between South Korea and China on Dec. 10. The official closing match of the tournament will be the men’s duel between South Korea and Japan on Dec. 18.
