It’s been almost a month since its third EP “I Trust” was released, but the songs of girl group (G)I-DLE can be heard everywhere and continue to dominate local streaming charts.

The music video for (G)I-DLE’s “Oh my god” on YouTube has over 80 million views as of Monday, and it looks like it will soon become the group’s third video with more than 100 million views.

When the group debuted in May 2018, no industry insiders predicted its success. It wasn’t part of K-pop’s big three agencies - SM, JYP and YG - and it pushed forward with a “girl crush” concept that wasn’t popular with male fans. But now (G)I-DLE is one of the three most successful K-pop girl groups alongside Blackpink and ITZY, and experts say four reasons can explain its success.

The popularity of girl crush

Up until the mid-2010s, the conventional way for girl groups to debut was to emphasize a pure, feminine look, as seen in successful groups like Girls’ Generation, Apink and Twice. But  after the mid-2010s, there was a  change in the industry as society called for female empowerment and gender sensitivity. Blackpink, which debuted in 2016, climbed to the top of the charts with its girl power message instead of a hyper-feminine look. Other groups like Mamamoo were brought into the limelight for its flamboyant performances and impressive vocal talents.

“(G)I-DLE is like 2NE1 in the year 2020,” pop culture critic Kim Il-gyum said, referring to the successful YG Entertainment girl group that debuted in 2009 and disbanded in 2016. “If there is a difference here, it is that back then, the girl group’s strong personality and colors were a minority. Now they’ve become the majority.”

Instead of appealing to the opposite sex with its femininity, (G)I-DLE’s fan base appreciates the group’s smoky eye makeup and powerful performances. Even its group name contains a philosophy: The word “I” represents each of the six members, while “dle” is the Korean word to count plural words. Together, the word means “a group of six unique individuals.”

Another interesting point is how the group’s songs transition into each other while telling a larger story. When looking at each of the group’s title tracks, “Latata” is about falling for a guy, then the song “Hann” moves onto finding out he cheated on you. “Uh-Oh” is about realizing that the boyfriend was worthless and dumping him and the song “Lion” from the hit 2019 Mnet competition show “Queendom” was about independence.

The group’s latest “Oh my god” may seem like a return to being in a relationship, but the significant other is described as a she, as seen from the verses such as “Oh my god, she took me to the sky,” or “Oh my god, she showed me all the stars.”

According to Choi Ji-na, a fan of the group leader Jeon So-yeon, the lyrics of (G)I-DLE are relatable because “it’s as if they’re speaking our stories.”

Alpha girls

The word “alpha girl” was first used in 2006 in Harvard Prof. Dan Kindlon’s book “Alpha Girls: Understanding the New American Girl and How She is Changing the World.” These girls were referred to as the up-and-coming elites who were highly competent and weren’t afraid to challenge themselves. As a higher percentage of female students receive high marks on their tests compared to their male peers, the concept of “alpha girls” was seen as the start of a new era.

The group’s leader Soyeon is a classic example of an alpha girl. She is a versatile singer, rapper and dancer adept at writing lyrics and composing and arranging songs. All five tracks on the group’s recent EP were written by her. Before she joined (G)I-DLE, her potential was seen on the Mnet shows “Produce 101” and “Unpretty Rapstar 3.”

“Soyeon has secured an image that she is different and unique from the girl groups who are mass-produced at big agencies,” an insider said.

A global sound

“(G)I-DLE uses Eastern European pop music to create a peerless ethnic sound,” Kim Jin-woo, a researcher at Gaon Chart said. “In their music videos they use a lot of black and objects like candles and veils to enhance their mystical and dreamlike quality.”

The group’s unique approach stands out among other groups. Although Girls’ Generation was influenced by a northern European sound on its song “Genie,” European music is still relatively new in the local music industry.

Colorful performances

Live performance by well-known “girl crush” girl groups have always been must-see events. (G)I-DLE has been recognized as skilled performers since its debut, but its high-quality shows became widely known when its final performance on “Queendom” went viral online.

“The group’s success shows that society is changing,” Kim said. “In the future, more girl groups modeling themselves after (G)I-DLE will arrive.”

KISSING YOU’)
