Getting signed by KOZ marks a new dawn for singer DVWN

When everyone else had gone to sleep, singer-songwriter DVWN would pick up his notebook and pen to write down his thoughts, the same thoughts which later became the lyrics of his songs.

“Dawn is the time when my thoughts get very deep, and also when I work a lot, it’s always dawn,” he said in a short documentary about him produced by The Cut, a digital media platform, earlier this year.

But it wasn’t because of choice. There were days when DVWN could only work on his songs at the time because he was working two or three other jobs during the day.

“If you ask me what was the hardest part about my life three years ago, just trying to make ends meet every day was hard,” he recently told Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily. “I had to do part-time jobs at a butcher’s shop and convenience stores. […] The only thing that I owned that I could invest in myself was time.”

Because DVWN’s songs are a reflection of his past, the melodies and lyrics are often somber.

But that changed with his latest release, “Concrete,” a mix of acoustic and pop and part of the track list of his album “Dawn Defibrillation, Vol. 3” released on June 10. The music video for the song was made with stop-motion technology, rare among music videos of K-pop artists these days.

“Most of my songs so far were written three years ago when I lived in an underground apartment,” he said. “But ‘Concrete’ was written on a whim in the office of KOZ Entertainment. “Zico heard it once, and he said he liked it and that we should make it part of the new release.”

DVWN had been releasing music consistently on his account on SoundCloud. Zico came across his songs there and decided to get in touch with him directly.

“That was a big surprise,” DVWN recalled. “I started imagining all these possible offers from him, even before he had mentioned any.”

DVWN was picked up by Zico in 2019 and signed an exclusive contract with his agency, KOZ Entertainment.

In the recent interview with Ilgan Sports, DVWN spoke of his past, what it has been like to work with Zico and some things that have never changed for him when it comes to turning his late-night thoughts into music.

The following are edited excerpts of the interview.

Have things changed since you signed with an agency?

Not really. The environment that I work in is better, but having an agency means there are expectations that you as an artist need to meet. So I find myself lost in my thoughts more. I guess what changed are the actual things that weigh heavily on my heart.

What were your first thoughts when Zico contacted you?

A year and a half after I had debuted as an artist, Zico contacted me on social media. That was a big surprise. I started imagining all these possible offers from him, even before he had mentioned any (laughs). I am thankful. I was very lucky. There are so many talented people out there, but not everyone finds an agency to support them.

What is it like to work with Zico?

I work on my music independently, but Zico gives me advice about whether he thinks the song can appeal to the general audience. The song “Concrete” used to have a lot more chorus singing, but we got rid of about 80 percent of it after Zico advised us to. He also suggested some changes to the song’s lyrics, but I felt that one change of a word in the lyrics could throw the rhythm off for the rest of the song. So I ended up fixing the song 10 times or so. Zico’s always right, by the way.

The music video for “Concrete” is different.

We used stop-motion animation. I was filmed, too, but I got edited out (laughs). Acting is so hard for me. Well, at least I wasn’t the only one edited out. Cheeze, who featured the song, was edited out, too.

Do you ever think about taking acting classes?

No, but I would like to take some dance classes. I’m not great, but whenever I have free time I try to find out the dance moves trending in the United States.

How did the series of albums “Dawn Defibrillation” come about?

They’re a collection of music that came about through many dawns. I don’t know if the series will continue. I might do away with it altogether.

What do your tattoos mean?

On my right hand is the puppy that I used to have. I intend to have the image of my current puppy tattooed onto my left hand. On my neck is a tattoo the shape of a fire, which is similar to a fire character from the animation “Howl’s Moving Castle.” The character symbolizes youth in the animation. The tattoo is a reminder to myself to remember my youth. That’s the mindset I have when I write my music.

What do you do for fun?

I read a lot lately. I walk my dog every day. I try to look up fun places that my dog and I can enjoy together.

It came off as a surprise that you were part of the Marine Corps.

I was looking for a place to do my military service and the Marine Corps was receiving applications. The department that I was with, a search and rescue team, had allowed soldiers a lot of free time to do other studies. By the time I had completed my service, I had seven licenses including one on cooking Korean food and western food. I do a lot of cooking at home.

Any plans on taking classes on music?

I guess it’s fun to learn things one at a time. It’s become easier to make music on your own because of technological advancement and functions on YouTube. But that also means it’s become more difficult to be a star because everyone is really good these days. I am lucky to have met Zico. I will try my best to learn and grow and make better music for listeners out there.

[인터뷰] 다운 ”지코 사장님 만난 건 운, 세심한 조언해줘”

가수 다운은 지코가 영입한 KOZ엔터테인먼트 1호 아티스트다. 음악에 뜻을 품고 시작한 지 얼마 되지 않아 금방 지코의 품에 안겼다. 다운은 "운이 좋았다. 실력이 있어도 연이 닿지 않는 사람들이 많은데 나는 우연한 기회에 연락을 받았다"면서 데뷔를 조금씩 실감했다.

지코를 사로잡은 다운의 무기는 시간과 노력이다. 24세에 음악으로 진로를 정하고 남들보다 뒤처진 만큼 시간을 배로 들여 작업에 몰두했다. 고깃집, 편의점 아르바이트를 돌며 꿈을 이루기 위해 노력했던 값진 시간들이 지금의 다운을 만들었다. 그는 "내게 투자할 수 있는 건 오직 시간이었다"면서 덤덤하게 당시를 회상했다. 또 "소속사가 있어서 특별히 달라진 것은 없다. 환경이 편해졌지만 그 반대로 부담이나 압박이 생겨서 고민이 많아진다. 힘든 종류가 다를 뿐 느끼는 무게는 비슷하다"면서 성공을 갈망했다.

-신곡 '콘크리트'는 어떻게 만들어졌나.
"처음엔 남자 혼자 부르는 노래였는데 주변 사람의 조언으로 듀엣 버전이 됐다. 표현하고 싶은 이야기가 더 잘 드러날 것 같았고 그렇게 어려운 작업은 아니라서 바로 수정했다. 2분 30초의 짧은 노래였는데 여자 보컬 부분을 추가하고 이야기를 조금 더 담아봤다."

-뮤직비디오가 귀엽더라.
"스톱모션 애니메이션이다. 나도 찍었는데 통편집 당했다. 긁적이는 연기였는데 너무 어려웠다. 피처링해준 치즈 씨도 같이 찍었는데 함께 통편집됐다."

-다른 뮤직비디오에선 어항 쓰고 연기도 직접 하던데.
"그 어항을 진짜 머리에 썼다. 그렇게 무겁지 않은데 숨이 안 쉬어져서 힘들었다. 그렇게 고생할 줄은 몰랐다. 스톱모션도 조금씩 움직여나가는 장면 촬영이 굉장히 어렵더라. 연기자가 아니라서 그런지 매번 뮤직비디오 촬영마다 힘들다."

-연기를 배워볼 생각은.
"오히려 춤을 배우고 싶다. 잘 추지는 못하지만 미국에서 유행하는 춤 영상 보는 걸 엄청 좋아한다."

-'콘크리트'는 그간의 '새벽 제세동' 시리즈와는 분위기가 다르다.
"어두운 곡 위주로 보여드렸는데 3년 전 쓴 노래들이라 그렇다. 지하살면서 음악에 부딪힐 때였다. 반면 '콘크리트'는 소속사를 만난 후 작업실에서 장난처럼 써봤다. 그래서 발매 생각이 전혀 없었는데 지코 형이 우연히 노래를 듣게 되면서 '좋다고 내보자'고 했다."

-분위기가 다름에도 '새벽 제세동'으로 묶은 이유는.
"'콘크리트'만 최근에 쓴 노래지만 '제세동'으로 묶었다. 새벽에 대해 말해보자는 주제로 내가 느끼는 것들을 채우는 시리즈이기 때문에 묶여도 된다고 생각했다. 앞으로의 '새벽 제세동' 시리즈는 어떻게 될지 모르겠다. 빨리 털어내고 싶기도 하다."

-3년 전 가장 힘들었던 건 뭐였나.
"돈이었다. 고깃집, 편의점 아르바이트를 해야만 했다. 2016년에 편의점 점주도 해봤는데 그땐 음악을 시작하기 전이라서 상황이 달랐다. 음악의 길을 정한 후엔 점주에서 아르바이트 신분으로 내려왔다."

-지코에게 연락이 왔을 때 기분은.
"1년 반이 흘러 SNS로 연락이 왔다. 의아하기도 하고 놀라기도 했다. 연락이 온 그 순간부터 혼자 김칫국도 마셨다. 계약에 대한 기대가 있었는데 좋은 조건으로 잘 맞춰줘서 감사하다."

-지코가 곡 작업에 조언도 많이 해주는 편인가.
"작업은 혼자 하지만 대중성이나 디테일에 대한 조언은 지코 형에 받는다. '콘크리트'도 조언을 받아 처음 버전에서 코러스를 80% 덜어냈다. 초마다 피드백을 주시고, 이번 '콘크리트'도 가사 한 단락과 한 글자 수정하라는 식으로 피드백이 왔다. 하지만 내 강박이 한 글자 수정하면 이야기가 달라질 것 같아서 10번 정도 전체 수정했다. 수정을 많이 거치긴 했지만 지코 형이 말이 다 맞는 말이다."

-데뷔한 것을 실감할 땐 언제인지.
"솔직히 코로나 19 사태로 잘 모르겠다. 첫 공식 활동은 지난해 12월이었다. 6개월 정도 흘렀는데 공연을 한 번밖에 못 했다. 올해는 대학 축제도 많이 하고 싶었는데 내년을 기약해야 할 수도 있다."

-몸에 타투가 독특하다.
"오른손에 키웠던 강아지를 그려 넣었다. 왼손엔 지금 키우고 있는 강아지를 그릴 생각이다. 목 부분엔 영화 '하울의 움직이는 성'에 나오는 불을 그렸다. 극중에서 동심을 의미하는 매개체였는데, 동심을 항상 잊지 말자는 의미를 담았다. 음악 스타일도 그런 것을 생각을 많이 하고 쓰는 편이다."

-취미생활은 뭔가.
"최근에 책 많이 읽었다. 강아지 산책도 매일 시킨다. 애견 놀이터가를 찾아보고 가는 게 취미다."

-해병대 출신이라는 이력이 의외다.
"지원해서 갈 수 있는 빠른 곳이었다. 내가 나온 수색대가 시간이 많아서 자격증을 7개나 따서 사회로 나왔다. 한식조리사자격증, 양식조리사자격증도 있다. 집에서 혼자 요리도 많이 한다."

-음악을 전문적으로 배워보고 싶진 않나.
"해보면서 알아가는 것들이 재미있는 것 같다. 요즘에 유튜브나 여러 장비가 좋아서 음악을 하기가 쉽다. 공급이 많아지다보니 그 가운데서 성공하는 비율도 낮다. 잘하는 사람이 많은데 빛을 보기가 어려워진 느낌이다. 그에 반해 나는 지코 형을 만나 운이 좋다. 그만큼 책임감도 늘었으니 완성도 높은 음악을 계속 들려드리는 것이 목표다."
