LS-Nikko Copper, a producer of electrolytic copper and precious metals, donated 10 million won ($9,000) worth of doorknobs made of antimicrobial copper to the Ulsan Child Care Institution on Thursday.
Around 120 children live at the institution.
The company said the donation was intended to improve the health of the children.
“Door handles made of copper kill germs as time passes, and therefore, are especially useful to children,” said the company in a statement.
The purity of the copper is more than 90 percent, higher than the usual 65 percent for antimicrobial copper. The company “will continue to make social contributions using antimicrobial copper doorknobs,” said a spokesperson for the company in a statement.
“We are thankful for the special gift,” said the institution's chief, Kim Young-sook.
