Some of Korea’s largest companies including Samsung and LG have decided to give employees paid leave when they get Covid-19 vaccinations - for up to three days.

삼성·LG 등 한국의 일부 대기업들이 백신을 접종한 직원들에게 최장 3일의 유급휴가를 주기로 했다.

한국 최대 시가총액의 삼성전자는 수요일 전 직원들에게 백신 접종한 날 유급 휴가가 주어질 것이라고 밝혔다. 만약 접종 후 부작용이 나타날 경우 진단서를 제출하지 않아도 최대 2일의 휴가를 추가로 받을 수 있다.

On Tuesday, the company’s labor union submitted an official request asking for three days paid leave for every vaccinated employee. According to the company, discussions for “vaccine leave” had been underway for about a month.

화요일 이 회사의 노동조합은 백신을 맞은 모든 직원들은 3일간의 휴가를 받을 수 있도록 해달라고 회사에 공식적으로 요구했다. 삼성전자에 따르면 백신휴가에 대한 논의는 지난 한 달 간 진행돼 왔다.

SK hynix told employees on Wednesday that they will be given one day of paid leave and another two days if they develop symptoms. LG Group decided to be a little more generous, guaranteeing two days of paid leave regardless of whether the employee experiences side effects or not.

지난 수요일 SK하이닉스는 하루의 유급휴가와 부작용 증상이 나타날 경우 추가 2일의 휴가가 주어질 것이라고 밝혔다. LG그룹은 그보다 조금 후한 결정을 내려 부작용 발생 여부에 관계없이 2일간의 유급휴가를 주기로 했다.

Compared to traditional conglomerates, IT firms were even faster in lavishing staff with inoculation benefits. On May 5, Naver said all of its 7,500 employees from July would be entitled to paid leave on the day after they are inoculated. Game company NHN gave staff two-day leaves.

전통 대기업에 비해 IT 회사들은 백신접종의 혜택을 주는데 훨씬 빠르게 움직였다. 지난 5월 5일 네이버는 전체 7500명 직원에게 오는 7월부터 백신을 접종한 다음날 유급휴가를 주겠다고 밝혔다. 게임회사인 NHN은 직원들에게 2일간의 휴가를 주기로 했다.

The announcements came a month after the government recommended private companies introduce paid leaves for inoculated people. In late March, the government said it would introduce “vaccine leaves” for any one that reports side effects. They were to be granted paid leave of up to two days, according to their conditions. A doctor’s note or medical documents were not required.

이 발표는 정부가 기업들이 백신을 맞은 직원들에게 유급휴가를 주는 것을 권장한 한 달 후에 나왔다. 지난 3월 정부는 부작용을 겪은 사람에게 백신 휴가를 주겠다고 밝혔다. 이런 사람들은 컨디션에 따라 최대 2일까지 유급휴가를 받을 수 있다. 진단서나 의료 기록은 제출하지 않아도 된다.

According to a government survey released in late March, 32.8 percent of 18,000 inoculated people said they experienced some inconvenience in their everyday lives. Around 3 percent had to visit a medical institute due to unexpected side effects.

정부 조사에 따르면 지난 3월 말 백신을 접종한 1만8000명 가운데 32.8%가 일상생활에 어려움을 겪을 정도로 불편을 겪었다. 약 3%는 예상하지 못한 부작용 때문에 의료기관을 방문해야 했다.

The most frequently reported side effects were pain at the inoculated spot (28.3 percent), muscle pain (25.4 percent), fatigue (23.8 percent), headache (21.3 percent) and fever (18.1 percent). Multiple answers were allowed. The possibility of experiencing side effects was higher among younger people.

가장 많이 보고된 부작용은 주사 맞은 부위의 통증이 28.3%, 근육통이 25.4%, 두통 21.3%, 열이 18.1%였다. 조사에서는 복수 답변이 가능했다. 부작용을 경험할 가능성은 젊은 층이 더 높았다.

While the leave was mandatory for public sector workers, the government did not make it mandatory for private companies, but did suggest they follow suit.

공공 분야에서 일하는 사람들의 경우 유급휴가가 무조건 주어진다. 하지만 정부는 사기업에 대해서는 의무조항으로 강제하지 않았으며 단지 정부 방침을 따를 것을 제안했다.

Some lawmakers proposed bills to mandate vaccine leaves in the private sector and provide financial support for companies that offered them. But according to local reports, the idea is facing opposition from the finance ministry and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, citing excessive costs.

일부 국회의원들은 사기업에게도 백신 휴가를 의무화하고 재정적으로 지원하는 법안을 제안했다. 하지만 국내 보도에 따르면 기획재정부와 질병청은 이 제안에 대해 과도한 비용이 든다는 이유로 반대했다.
