CJ CheilJedang pledged to go carbon neutral by 2050 and become more ESG focused.
The owner of the Bibigo brand announced on Wednesday that it will achieve carbon neutrality and zero waste by 2050 to combat climate change.
Its strategy has three main pillars: creating carbon-free business environments, innovating eco-friendly products and solutions and helping its suppliers become more environmentally-friendly.
The company hopes to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent by 2030 from the emissions generated in 2020. It also plans to fully convert from fossil fuels to sustainable and bio-energy sources in America and Europe by 2030, and in Asia by 2050.
In countries with water shortages, like China and Indonesia, CJ CheilJedang will reduce water usage by up to 20 percent.
The company said it will not waste any water or waste materials, like packaging or food, through recycling or by using the waste for agricultural purposes so it does not have to be buried in landfills, a practice common in the United States, China and Vietnam.
Development of eco-friendly materials, like biodegradable plastics and food, like meat substitutes, are also planned.
CJ CheilJedang follows other major companies, including Posco, that are seeking to go carbon neutral by 2050 in line with the government’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by that year.
