Women's sabre team wins gold at World Cup

Korea won the women’s sabre World Cup gold medal in Istanbul, Turkey on Sunday and two men’s individual World Cup bronze medals in Budapest, Hungary on Saturday.
 
Sunday's gold medalists were the same women’s sabre team who took bronze at the Tokyo Games — Choi Soo-yeon, Kim Ji-yeon, Yoon Ji-su and Seo Ji-yeon. Korea beat Georgia 45-37 in the round of 16, Bulgaria 45-32 in the quarterfinals and Italy 45-32 in the semifinals to reach the finals.  
 
Korea faced Spain in the finals. Kim Ji-yeon was first up on the piste, scoring 5-0 against Araceli Navarro of Spain. Korea was able to lead the match until the very end, finishing 45-31 up to win their first World Cup medal of the season. With the gold medal, the Korean women's sabre team moves up to world No. 2 from their previous fourth position. 
 
The individual event took place on Friday, where Yoon finished 10th, Kim Ji-yeon finished 17th, Choi finished 19th and Seo 59th.

The men’s individual sabre World Cup also took place in Budapest, with Olympic gold medalists Kim Jung-hwan and Oh Sang-uk winning bronze on Saturday.
 
Kim Jung-hwan beat countryman Chung Ho-jin 15-6 in the round of 64, Lim Jae-yeon 15-11 in the round of 32, Kim Jun-ho 15-8 in the round of 16, then Daryl Homer of the United states 15-5 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.  
 
Kim Jung-hwan faced Aron Szilagyi of Hungary, but took a narrow 15-14 loss, failing to advance to the finals.
 
Teammate Oh also took bronze after beating Fare Arfa of Canada 15-10 in the round of 64, Andrew Mackiewicz of the United States 15-11 in the round of 32, Mohamed Amer 15-7 in the round of 16 and Bolade Apithy of France 15-9 in the quarterfinals. However, Oh failed to advance to the finals, losing 15-8 to Luca Curatoli of Italy in the semifinals.
