'Mrs. Doubtfire' musical to be staged in Korea in August

Broadway musical "Mrs. Doubtfire," based on the 1993 film of the same name, will premiere in Korea in August, according to production company SEM on Tuesday.

It will be the first international production of the musical.

"Mrs. Doubtfire" premiered in Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre in December 2019. It opened on Broadway one year later and is still running at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. "Mrs. Doubtfire" is also slated to open in London's West End in October this year.

"Mrs. Doubtfire" is a comic musical about a middle-aged man named Daniel Hillard who is out of his job and divorced. After he loses custody of his children, Daniel creates an alter ego of a Scottish nanny, Mrs. Doubtfire, to stay in his kids' lives.

The musical was written by American bestselling author John O'Farrell and American screenwriter and director Karey Kirkpatrick. The score and lyrics are by Karey Kirkpatrick and his brother and singer-songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick. The three creatives are also behind the 2015 critically-acclaimed musical "Something Rotten!"

The movie "Mrs. Doubtfire" is an American comedy-drama film that starred actor Robin Williams and was directed by Chris Columbus. The movie was a box office hit, grossing $441.3 million on a $25 million budget and becoming the second-highest-grossing film worldwide in 1993. It also received the Golden Globe Award for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture in 1994.

The musical "Mrs. Doubtfire" will run at the Charlotte Theater in Songpa District, southern Seoul, from August to September.
