Jumbos' Jung Ji-seok signs record ₩920 million contract

The Korean Air Jumbos signed a one-year deal worth 920 million won ($740,000) with free agent Jung Ji-seok on Monday afternoon, making him the highest-paid free agent in V League history.

Jung will earn 700 million won in annual salary with 220 million won in incentives each year. The new contract puts Jung far beyond teammate Han Sun-soo’s previous record-setting deal of 750 million won.

Jung is the star outside hitter for the Korean Air Jumbos, who led the club to a V League title this season after beating KB Insurance in the championship series to take both the regular season and championship titles for the second consecutive year.

Last season, the Jumbos beat Seoul Woori Card Wibees — now the WooriWON — in the championship series to take both the regular season and championship titles for the first time in the club's history. Jung was named MVP for that season, winning his second MVP award, after the 2018-19 season.

Despite his success on the court, Jung's signing isn't without controversy. The outside hitter was questioned last year as part of a currently suspended investigation into allegations he assaulted his ex-girlfriend.

The Korea Volleyball Association (KOVO) announced the results of the men’s V League trades on Monday afternoon, revealing that only free agent Kim Hyeong-jin moved — from the Cheonan Hyundai Capital Skywalkers to the Korean Air Jumbos — with the 25 other free agents all inking a deal with their original teams.

The other players that decided to stay with the Jumbos are left Kwak Seung-suk, who inked a deal worth 710 million won, center Jin Sung-tae, who signed a deal worth 312 million won, and center Kim Kyu-min, who signed a deal worth 55 million won.

The men’s V League ended on April 9 as Korean Air beat KB Insurance 3-2 to win the best-of-three championship series after having won their first match 3-1 on April 5.  The championship series was shortened this season from a best-of-five to a best-of-three format due to Covid-19.
