Comedian Kim Byung-man’s mother passed away on Tuesday, his agency SM C&C announced Wednesday.

The agency confirmed that the victim in news reports on Tuesday of a woman in her 70s who died after getting stranded in a flood tide while harvesting clams in a mud flat in Buan, North Jeolla, was Kim’s mother. Kim’s mother was with two other women, who were rescued in time.

“Kim is planning to hold the funeral privately,” the agency said in a statement. “He is very shocked by the sudden death of his mother. Please respect his decision.”

Kim has been a star in the decade-long program “Law of the Jungle” on SBS, which takes him and other guests into the wilderness overseas. Last year, he also made headlines when he got a commercial pilot license. Kim debuted as a KBS comedian in 2002.
