Korea's largest annual travel fair Korea Travel Expo 2022 co-hosted by the Korea Tourism Association and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism began its four-day run at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Jung District, central Seoul, on Thursday.

This year marks the fair's 19th edition.

Under the theme "Travel freely in my country," this year's fair strives to encourage locals to travel without restrictions around the country as Covid-19 is subsiding for the first time in three years.

A total of 170 organizations are participating in this year's fair and 270 booths have registered. The booths are located both inside and outside the DDP.

The booths promote different tourist locations and regions in Korea, offering information about the location's local festivals, foods and tips about traveling to the destinations. Some also offer hands-on activities such as making eco-bags, handkerchiefs and foldable fans, and virtual activities that allow visitors to experience certain locations online before traveling there in person.

Other programs throughout the four-day run include a lecture by photographer Jo Jeong-eun, musical performances by the band Dalda and a fashion show showcasing Korean traditional hanbok.

For the opening ceremony, second Vice President of the Ministry of Culture Jo Yong-man, President of Korea Tourism Association Yun Yong-ho, Deputy CEO of Korea Tourism Organization Shin Sang-yeong, Vice President of Korea Association of Travel Agents Baek Seung-pil, Vice President of the Korean Association of Professional Convention Organizers Kim Mi-ah and singer Hwang Chi-yeul were in attendance.

"The increased global interest in K-culture translates to heightened interest in Korean tourism," said Cho. "While Covid-19 put a damper on the industry, I hope that this fair can kickstart the nation's return to normalcy and encourage everyone to travel freely."
