The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Gwacheon branch is presenting “Prayer for Life,” a special exhibition on chaesaekhwa, or Korean polychromatic paintings.

The exhibition focuses on the traditional roles of chaesaekhwa, such as chasing off evil spirits, bringing good fortune or documenting history.

Around 80 pieces are on display, ranging from court paintings made in the 19th century and early 20th century to craftworks, calligraphy and folk paintings made from the late 20th century.

Significant artists include 70-year-old Kang Yobae, 74-year-old Shin Sangho and 83-year-old Venerable Seongpa, the spiritual leader of the Jogye Order, Korea’s largest Buddhist sect.

“Prayer for Life” divides works into four sections, each exploring the main functions of chaesaekhwa: byeoksa (the act of getting rid of evil spirits), gilsang (auspicious signs), gyohun (morals) and gamsang (appreciation).

Among the chaesaekhwa are paintings like chaekgado (paintings of books and stationery), sansuhwa (landscape paintings) and folding screens. Animals such as tigers and magpies and mountainous landscapes are also recurring themes depicted in chaesaekhwa.

“Prayer for Life: Special Exhibition of Korea Polychrome Painting” continues until Sept. 25. The MMCA Gwacheon branch is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are 2,000 won ($1.50).
