The play “The Pope” will be performed in Korea for the first time on Aug. 30 and run through Oct. 23.

The theatrical production company Acom posted a teaser on YouTube this week.

“The Pope,” which is a play by New Zealand novelist and playwright Anthony McCarten, premiered in Britain in 2019. It was adapted into a film, titled “The Two Popes” the same year, available on Netflix.

Korea is the first country to be licensed to perform the play outside Britain.

The story explores the relationship between Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis and is said to have been inspired by real-life events following the aftermath of the Vatican leaks scandal in 2012.

The Netflix adaptation stars Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis and Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI, and received nominations for the Academy Awards, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and Golden Globe Awards.

“The Pope” will take place at the Kepco Art Center in Seocho District, southern Seoul.
