GS Entec is acquiring technology and expertise from Sif Netherlands to enter the offshore wind farm business, the company said Sunday.

Founded in 1988, GS Entec is a subsidiary of GS Global.

Sif, founded in 1948, specializes in building offshore wind monopile foundations, which are steel tubes that are driven into the seabed to hold up the offshore wind turbines. Monopiles can be made quicker and cheaper than other types of foundations, such as tripods.

The Korean company will be using Sif’s monopole manufacturing technology to start the new business. It will be the first time for an Asian country to implement the monopile technique for its offshore turbines, according to GS Entec.

“We will target the Asian market with the innovative monopile technology,” said Doh Jung-hae, CEO of GS Entec.

Last May, GS Holdings announced it will invest 21 trillion won ($16 billion) over the next five years, of which 14 trillion won will go to its clean energy business, including the development of renewable energy.
