Four days from Montreal to Washington (KOR)

Day 1.

It was a flight from Montreal, Canada to Washington DC. I was waiting at the gate, but there was no announcement to board the plane. I got a text message announcing a one-hour delay, and then another one-hour delay, only for the flight to be canceled in the end. At the check-in counter, I was standing in line with hundreds of passengers from other canceled fights. But there were only two agents dealing with them. After waiting for six hours, I got a ticket from Washington through Toronto the next day. The motel room I got nearby was 591 Canadian dollars, more than 600,000 won.

Day 2.

When I got up in the morning, I got a text message saying that the flight to Toronto was canceled. So, I decided to take a train to Toronto. Five hours later, I arrived at Pearson Airport, checked in and got ready to board. But shortly before departure, the flight to Washington DC was canceled. I tried to get my luggage back, but the airport was chaotic with piles of luggage that were not claimed. An employee who had a walkie-talkie said there was nothing he could do. A tourist from Britain said that he had been there for three days after his luggage was lost. It was the same as the movie, Terminal.

Day 3.

In the end, the airline booked a flight on another airline. I would have missed that flight if I hadn’t checked my email in time. After checking in, I was at immigration, and this time, an airport agent came and directed all passengers to leave. There was an issue with customs because of lost luggage. Passengers were frustrated, but there was nothing we could do. The airline booked the first flight the next day, saying, “It will be fine tomorrow.”

Day 4.

At 5 a.m., the departure hall was already crowded. Many flights were scheduled at 7 a.m., but the airport immigrations service began at 6 a.m. I could barely get on board, and I was anxious that we could be told to deplane at anytime. The plane took off and I was relieved when it finally landed in Washington DC.

This is what I went through over the past four days. In CNN’s study on major airports around the world, Pearson Airport in Toronto was named the worst airport, with 52.5 percent of flight delays in a month. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the workforce was downsized, but travel demand has surged. The baggage operation was hit hard. Situations are similar in other airports in London and Paris. As a result, many people are paying unnecessary costs. The travel industry expects the chaos to continue until the end of the year. The aftereffects of the pandemic run deep.

첫째 날.
몬트리올 거쳐 워싱턴으로 돌아오는 캐나다 비행기 편이었다. 탑승장 앞에 있는데 시간이 돼도 입장하란 말이 없다. 휴대전화 문자로 한 시간, 또 한 시간 늦어졌단 소식이 전해지더니 결국 취소됐다. 체크인 카운터에는 이미 취소된 다른 비행기에서 쏟아져 나온 수백 명이 서 있었지만, 이들을 처리하는 직원은 단 두 명이었다. 6시간을 기다린 끝에 다음날 토론토 경유 워싱턴행 표를 받았다. 자정 넘어 간신히 잡은 근처 모텔 숙박비는 591캐나다달러. 60만원이 넘었다.

둘째 날.
아침에 일어나니 토론토행 비행기가 취소됐단 문자가 왔다. 그렇다면 토론토까지 기차를 타고서라도 가기로 했다. 5시간에 걸쳐 피어슨 공항에 도착해, 짐을 부치고 수속을 마쳤다. 하지만 출국 직전 워싱턴행 비행기마저 취소됐다. 짐이라도 찾으려 했지만, 며칠째 주인 못찾은 트렁크들이 쌓여 공항은 대혼란 상태였다. 무전기를 들고 다니던 직원은 사실상 해줄 수 있는 일이 없다고 했다. 영국서 왔다는 한 관광객은 짐을 못 찾아 사흘째 이곳에 있다고 했다. 영화 '터미널'이 따로 없었다.

셋째 날.
결국 이 항공사는 다른 미국 항공사 비행기를 잡아줬다. 그나마도 제때 e메일을 안 봤으면 놓칠 뻔했다. 수속을 마치고 출국심사대까지 갔는데, 이번엔 공항직원이 오더니 모두 다시 밖으로 나가라고 했다. 분실한 짐 때문에 세관신고에 문제가 생겼다는 것이다. 여행객들이 분통을 터뜨렸지만, 딱히 할 수 있는 일이 없었다. 항공사에선 "내일은 잘 될 것"이라며 다음 날 첫 비행기를 잡아줬다.

넷째 날.
새벽 5시 출국장은 이미 북새통이었다. 아침 7시쯤에 항공편이 몰렸는데, 공항 출입국업무는 6시나 돼야 시작했기 때문이다. 서둘러 겨우 비행기에 오를 수 있었지만, 언제라도 다시 내리라 할까 봐 불안했다. 캐나다 상공을 지난 비행기가 워싱턴 레이건 공항에 착륙했고, 그제야 마음이 놓였다.

지난달 토론토 피어슨 공항에서 겪은 일이다. CNN은 지난 21일 세계 주요공항을 조사한 결과, 약 한 달간 지연 항공편이 52.5%나 된 이곳을 최악의 공항으로 꼽았다. 코로나19 동안 인력은 대거 줄였는데, 여행수요는 폭증한 탓이다. 사람 손이 직접 필요한 수하물 업무는 타격이 더 컸다. 지금 런던·파리 등 다른 공항도 사정은 마찬가지여서, 많은 이들이 불필요한 비용을 치르고 있다. 업계에선 이런 난리가 연말까진 이어질 거라고 한다. 팬데믹이 남긴 후유증이 너무 깊고 짙다.
