A sinkhole opened up near Naksan Beach in Yangyang, Gangwon, on Wednesday. [NEWS1]
A massive sinkhole opened up at a construction site near Naksan Beach in Yangyang, Gangwon, during the early hours of Wednesday.
At around 6:40 a.m., a large sinkhole was found near Naksan Beach, estimated to be 12 meters wide (39.3 feet), eight meters long and three meters deep. It caused the collapse of a nearby convenience store and water and sewage facilities to be ruptured.
Ninety-six people staying nearby were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
The police and fire department are investigating the cause of the sinkhole together with the local government and the Korea Gas Safety Corporation.
