More holiday vouchers available in Seoul, foreigners included

Seoul is offering discounted vouchers from September that can be used at local businesses in the city.

Following a similar offering last January for the Lunar New Year holiday, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will once again issue a total of 479 billion won ($356.92 million) in pre-paid vouchers offering 10 percent discounts ahead of the Chuseok harvest holidays.

Individuals can buy up to 700,000 won of such vouchers, called Seoul Love Gift Certificates, per month. Long-term foreign residents of Seoul can buy them too.

Seoul Love Gift Certificates can be bought through five mobile applications, including the Seoul Pay Plus app, T-Money Pay, Shinhan SOL, Money Tree, and Shinhan pLay.

They are valid for up to five years, and unused vouchers can be fully refunded or even if partially used, 60 percent or more.

Sales will start Sept. 1 for 15 districts in Seoul including Gangbuk and Gwangjin, while the other 10 districts, including Mapo and Yongsan, will start the next day.

On Sept. 1, purchases will be made available for residents of Gangbuk and Gwangjin at 9 a.m.; Gwanak and Jungnang at 10 a.m.; Seongbuk and Dongjak at 11 a.m.; Nowon at 12 p.m.; Dongdaemun and Dobong at 1 p.m.; Seongdong and Geumcheon at 2 p.m.; Gangnam at 3 p.m.; Yeongdeungpo at 4 p.m.; and Seodaemun and Guro at 5 p.m.

On Sept. 2, purchases will be made available for Mapo District at 9 a.m.; Yongsan at 10 a.m.; Yangcheon at 11 a.m.; Seocho at 12 p.m.; Jongno at 1 p.m.; Gangdong at 2 p.m.; Songpa at 3 p.m.; Eunpyeong at 4 p.m.; and Jung and Gangseo at 5 p.m.

The city government recommended interested people to sign up for the Seoul Pay Plus app in advance.
