Posco Holdings completed the construction of a battery recycling plant in Poland, the company said Friday.

The Poland Legnica Sourcing Center (PLSC), which is located in Brzeg Dolny, will recycle scraps and used batteries to produce black mass, a powdery faction that contains nickel, lithium, cobalt and manganese.

The produced black mass will be sent to Posco HY Clean Metal, a joint venture set up between Posco and China's Huayou Cobalt, for the process of extracting the minerals from the powder in Gwangyang, South Jeolla.

Key materials like lithium, nickel and cobalt make up one-third of battery costs, and the ability to acquire them will determine the competitiveness of battery companies and even electric vehicle companies.

The plant will have 7,000 tons of annual capacity, the company said.

"Recycling is core to Posco's second material business," saod Yoo Byeong-og, head of the Industrial Gases & Hydrogen Business at Posco. "We will continuously expand our recycling business to raise our competitiveness."

The company aims to have an annual lithium production capacity of 300,000 tons, 220,000 tons of nickel and 610,000 tons of cathodes by the end of 2030.
