Chatbots are driving changes not only in the IT industry but also in the automobile industry.

At the core of the chatbot hype is ChatGPT, a chat system of San Francisco-based Open AI’s language model GPT-3, or Generative Pre-training Transformer 3. It can handle all kinds of requests, including questions, writing assignments, tourism recommendations, summarizing and coding. It is even being used to predict trends.

Conversational computers are being installed in newly-released car models. They can suggest the best places to eat nearby, and may be able to offer more sophisticated information.

The JoongAng Ilbo on Wednesday asked ChatGPT what it thought about the latest issues within the automobile sector.

First, when the reporter asked ChatGPT’s perspective on which cars are better to own — EVs or gas cars — when looking ahead ten years into the future, the chatbot responded that gasoline cars may still be prevalent. Despite cars moving to electric, driven by the European Union's (EU) move to effectively ban new gas and diesel cars from 2035 and the U.S. government’s goal to make half of new car sales EVs in ten years, ChatGPT predicted that gas cars won’t phase out completely.

When asking about the choice between the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5 Series, the two bestselling models in Korea's imported car market last year, the bot was prudent, suggesting a test drive of both cars.

Data from the CarIsYou Data Lab shows that 28,318 E-class units were sold in 2022, followed closely by the 5 Series, at 21,512 units.

“The choice will depend on several factors, including your personal preferences, driving style and specific needs,” ChatGPT said. “Both have advanced technology and luxurious features.”

The bot gave out more detailed answers when asked about the choice between the  Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model 3.

“The Tesla Model 3 is known for its long driving range and advanced technology features,” it said. Tesla Model 3 can go up to 480 kilometers on a single charge, compared to Ioniq 5, which can get 458 kilometers.

On the other hand, the chatbot described the strengths of the Ioniq 5 a stylish and modern design and Hyundai Motor's reputation for dependable service.

When inquiring about the brand's trusted service, ChatGPT cited “excellent after-sales support with a network of dealerships and service centers.”

Hyundai Motor progressed far in the local market after starting a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty in the United States in 1999.

Switched on in November 2022, the text-based chatbot taking the internet by storm uses deep learning and machine learning to produce text that resembles those from a human. It uses reinforcement learning with human feedback, and it can also recognize and address errors.

ChatGPT can create responses to user questions and commands in plain text, with no programming required. It is also capable of remembering what was said earlier and elaborate on idea that was being discussed in the conversation.

Recently, the powerful new AI chatbot tool passed exams from law and business schools in the U.S.

In December last year, Google’s management reportedly issued a 'code red', which is a serious internal warning that signals the company is facing a crisis, over ChatGPT in response to its rise and Microsoft’s $10-billion investment into the chatbot.

“ChatGPT will show off its services of recommending best restaurants nearby or good music in a more sophisticated way than now by searching Google or even Naver,” said Lee Sung-yeop, professor at Korea University’s Graduate School of Management of Technology. “Existing search engines may protest saying that the chatbot took their data.”

A domestic vehicle infotainment system engineer said that the chatbot is “providing services that Google or Tesla cannot do with their data accumulated for decades,” pointing out that even if ChatGPT service lands here, there would be a limit to providing customized services specialized in Korea.
