Britain's Football Policing Unit has launched an investigation into racist abuse targeting Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min following a report from London's Metropolitan Police.

영국 축구 경찰대는 런던 경찰청에서 보고를 받은 후 토트넘 홋스퍼의 공격수 손흥민을 대상으로 한 인종차별적 욕설에 대해 수사에 착수했다.

"The Met has made the UK Football Policing Unit aware of a number of offensive social media comments and they are now carrying out further investigations," said a Metropolitan Police statement published by Britain's The Sun newspaper. "Comments of this nature are racist and wholly unacceptable. We will seek to locate and bring those responsible to justice."

영국 일간지 ‘더 선’은 “런던 경찰청은 영국 축구 경찰대에게 SNS에 다수의 모욕적인 댓글이 있다고 알렸으며, 경찰대는 추가적인 수사를 수행 중이다”라는 경찰청의 성명서를 게재했다. “이런 식의 댓글들은 인종차별적이며 전적으로 용납할 수 없다. 책임이 있는 자들을 찾아서 법의 심판을 받게 할 것이다.”

The police investigation comes after Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday called on the authorities and social media companies to respond after racist abuse was aimed at Son in a series of online posts during Tottenham's game against West Ham.

Tottenham did not disclose which specific abuse was reported to the authorities, but multiple tweets from self-proclaimed West Ham fans calling Son a “dog eating [expletive]” were posted shortly after Son scored a 72nd-minute goal on Sunday.

England’s Football Association also tweeted a call for social media companies to take action. A statement was also released by Kick It Out, the British government-backed organization dedicated to combating racism in football.

Racism is a chronic problem in the Premier League and in football across Europe. Last August a Chelsea fan was caught on camera making a racist gesture at Son, two weeks after Wolverhampton Wanderers complained to UEFA due to racism aimed at Hwang Hee-chan during a friendly in Portugal.
