Hyundai Mobis has developed the world's first rollable display for automobiles, allowing drivers to adjust the size depending on the driving mode.

The rollable display features a screen that can roll up or down when displaying driving information including the navigator, Mobis said.

The screen, which can be unfurled up to over 30 inches, completely disappears when the engine is turned off. As much as two-thirds of the display can be rolled up when only the minimum driving information is required.

Two-thirds of the display is open when using the GPS, and it can be switched to full-screen mode, with a 16:9 ratio, to watch videos while the vehicle is parked or charging.

The latest technology, which only requires 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) of depth, is helpful in diversifying interior design. In purpose-built vehicles for leisure activities and families, the display can be installed on the ceiling between the front and the back seats to let it roll down, or, alternatively, it can be installed sideways next to the seats, Mobis added.

Mobis' rollable display comes with quad high definition, a display resolution that measures 2560 by 1440 pixels.

The specific date for mass production has not been decided yet.

“We are looking forward to becoming a game changer in the automotive display market with our differentiated technology," said Han Young-hoon, head of the Electronics Convenience and Control division at Hyundai Mobis.

"We will pioneer the global market by driving the trend of new infotainment technologies."
