Hyundai Mobis, Israel's Ottopia to develop teleoperation system for autonomous vehicles

Hyundai Mobis and Israel's Ottopia will jointly develop a teleoperation system for autonomous vehicles.

The auto parts maker announced the partnership Wednesday. Hyundai Mobis will offer the hardware and software platform system integration while Ottopia will provide all the core software technologies for teleoperation.

The Remote Mobility Assistance (RMA) system makes it possible to remotely monitor autonomous vehicles and lets someone take control when needed. It is a technology targeting vehicle with Level 4 autonomy technology. A level 4 self-driving vehicle is able to operate on its own under ordinary conditions. Human intervention is rarely required.

Ottopia’s teleoperation software enables autonomous vehicle fleets to do things they otherwise cannot, while allowing their developers to dramatically cut R&D costs and comply with regulatory requirements, the company said.

Hyundai Mobis believes if it succeeds commercialization of the system, it will be applied to various markets including self-driving taxis, shuttles and even logistics and construction firms that used the transportation.

"Through our partnership with Ottopia we bring Teleoperation as the first of many services to be deployed on RMA.”
