Hyundai Mobis broke ground Wednesday on a $60 million battery system plant for electric vehicles (EV) in Indonesia.

The plant in Bekasi of West Java will be in charge of turning battery cells into modules that include a controller and a heat controller. Then they will be supplied to global automakers as large battery systems.

Battery cells will be supplied by HLI Green Power, a joint battery venture between Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Motor, Kia and LG Energy Solution.

The plant, which will be located in the Deltamas industrial complex, is 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) away from Hyundai Motor's plant in Indonesia and only 10 kilometers away from HLI Green Power.

"The battery system plant in Indonesia will become a solid footing for Hyundai Mobis' global electrification business targeting the Asean market," it said.

"Hyundai Mobis will become a partner for Indonesia and will play a pivotal role in establishing the EV ecosystem," said Oh Heung-sub, senior vice president of electrification at Hyundai Mobis, expressing his thanks to the Indonesian government for its support in his congratulatory remarks.
